There is a free demo you can download and play for yourself. Do keep in mind the speed grades justin pointed out.

justin : there are 4 speed grades. I didn't check but perhaps the HD clip was the slowest. The fastest is more than fast enough for the number of curves per second you have to hit.

So far, I think it is a great update to the original concept of Wipeout. It looks amazing.

Koil : Well...evidently the PS3 browser can only handle 1 image at a time...I have 3 photos of the same photo, but all done with different effects....the photo thing is definitely cool stuff...very cool.

I chose to go ahead and upload this one, as it catches the fire nicely, dramatic pic and this is with the color richness upped a little bit, which I think makes a ton of difference.

Good call justin on the pic thing..IO have over 60MB of pics now..lol

:EDIT: looking over that pic again...its friggin amazing. There is a lil AA artifacting on the front prongs of the ship (Go Assegai), but look at the background mesh, and the fire shadows....just effin impressive if ya ask me

you hit pause anywhere and then square to start screwing around with the picture mode. It isn't totally clear but you can rotate, pan and zoom the camera, and change which ship it points to, so when there is a huge explosion in a race hit pause and see if there is a good view of it. That is what I'm aiming to capture anyway..

justin : I created a custom playlist - and the sound modifications during jumps, shields up, etc, also apply to your own music.

Also i noticed that at least ZONES appears to have a visualizer: the track pulses in exact time to your tunes, so it has a beat detector built in.

It is also nice to set "track resume" on, and if you have a long playlist, it'll faithfully follow it through: picking up where it left off during each track, rather than restarting at track 1 or randomizing.

jmn1207 : The latest Grand Theft Auto is definitely worth a rental. You may like it. The San Andreas micro-management is gone.

My perfect game would be a melding of Gran Turismo and Test Drive Unlimited. I love cars and driving fast, but I don't want to race. I'm a Sunday driver, who needs traffic or jerks trying to pass you on a tight corner? :)

Koil : Yeah, I have Obliv for PC, and love the game, but the enemy scaling is annoying to me.

The GTA's were fun...I played the first 3 or so, but the repetition on them gets old to me...still nice to beat someone down, but for some reason I never got hooked like everyone else.

MGS will definitely be checked out.

jmn1207 : Not bad at all. Assassin's Creed is probably one of the most underrated games. Very fun. While I just can't stand the player level limitations of Oblivion, if you can get past that, the PS3 game of year version can steal much of your time, as can Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV. All should be easy to rent, but make sure you have enough time set aside to actually delve into them a bit.

Koil : So, in total...I picked up WipeoutHD before I left today, and while I was out, picked up:

Madden '08 - yeah, i know...old and busted now, but it was either 22 bucks or 55 bucks for the new one...

Assasins Creed - I have been drooling over that game since they announced it last year....I have only played about 30 min of it....but good lord is it pretty

God Of War 2 : I absolutely loved (along with everyone else) the first one, and then when I saw it for $12, I figured now was as good a time as any, plus it makes me feel better about getting the 60GB PS3...see my other thread regadring liking the version ya got for more details in that area...

and another six axis controller...all in all 73 bucks spent...not too shabby for all that

The 5.1 with that music cranked is rattling my house on the 50" Sammy...jesus its a thing to behold!!

jmn1207 : The music is a bit like SSX, the snowboarding game, in that the sound adjusts depending on the situation. When in a tunnel, the sound has a tinny, echo-like quality to it. When you jump, the sound seems to get more distant the higher you travel. I'm not sure, but it seems that the tempo changes when running the Zone events.

The music really helps give the race even more personality. Not sure if these effects are implemented for custom tracks, but I doubt it would be possible.

bignate : i didnt turn it up but the music was pretty good. next time i play i will put it on the surround sound and crank it up.

i have to say i like the lotalty system too. you have lots of "cars" to choose from but you get things for often playing the same car. i unlocked the second paint job fr the one i was using last night.

jmn1207 : Be sure to turn up the volume. I really like the music in this one, too. But if I do get bored with the original soundtrack, I've got a ton of my own music that I could listen to as well, including all of the tracks from the original version. :)

bignate : i put two hours into it last night i thought it was pretty fun. i have never played a wipeout game but it really reminded me of F-zero, specifically F-zero X from the N64.

it is a blast. it was also interesting to note that it does have the trophy system.

jmn1207 : I am thoroughly enjoying this one. The look and feel of this series has always made it a one of a kind experience. There is simply no other racing game with as much depth and subtle nuances with respect to the "perfect" lap. I always feel like there is room for improvement and I can set a better time or faster speed. The control and the associated visuals are exceptional. Maybe I just really fall for this genre: Future Tech Racing? I remember putting in several hours of my life into F-Zero on the Super Famico in Japan. (Super Nintendo)

Just like the first version of WipEout, I do prefer the events without weapons, although the weapon-enabled races are still enjoyable. The balance is great as the developers have had a lot of time to tweak the game play to get it just right, considering this is more of a port than a brand new version.

I only gave it a 2-3 hour run last night, but I seem to remember my times and others on the leaderboard being represented in hundredths of a second. I played through most of the 3rd event and did a few time trials and speed runs and my times were displayed in typical ".01s" format. However, while I could see my times and those on the leaderboard, even after a couple of hours my times were not shown on the leaderboard.

I got top 25th fastest in one of the tracks, hitting every boost each lap and finding the shortcut, but I know there are much better lines to take, faster ships, and you can do a roll on the jump for another boost. You can also get the rocket start if you time it right. There are already over 4000 times in the ladder for a track.
Oddly times are down to .1 only, not .01

This is probably going to strike some of todays gamers as too simple but there is satisfaction in perfecting things when the frame rate and graphics are so tight..

Koil : Yep exactly...I love it when I find a line that allows me to get through some heavy turns by staying close to the middle and minimal turning...gain mamjor time through those....that knowing where to set yourself up to hit the pats to launch you at the right angle....getting me all excited!

My PS3 gets here tomorrow!!

So .... just so I don't get all amp'd for nothing...this is downloadable right?

justin : sunk two solid hours into it, and it is awesome.

I don't know what new players will think but any wipeout addicts from way back will be very happy with this mix. Silky smooth.

I still really enjoy "tuning" each lap, first to be smooth, then to hit all the boost pads and work out where best to use the free boost, and finally to optimize for best time..

Normally the updates are made available around 1-3 PM for the Pacific Daylight Time. It should be the same for the US, and I see the store updates sometime after 4 PM on the east coast and no later than 6 PM.

SRFireside : Just to clarify WipeoutXL (or 2097 for the limies) was the second game of the series. The original Wipeout had all of its tracks made by CoLD SToRAGE (the guy who did Canada and Body in Motion on XL). Also many of those bands, while not as big as they were in the UK, were already on the forefront of the electronic dance music scene in the US.

I recommend the WipeoutXL CD for anybody who wants to hear a great representation of the best of 90's EDM. Lots of rare tracks and a few exclusive to the CD (Fluke has a really sweet remix of Atom Bomb found nowhere else but this CD).

Well, I don't know about the states but these bands were huge in europe when they appeared on the first wipeout - so it may have been clairvoyant for the US, but was a fairly mainstream set of tracks in the UK.

While I doubt the new one will be quite as cutting edge, they've always seemed to have decent music...Hope the new one continues this.

SRFireside : There will be online play for up to eight players is what I am hearing. Early review from the U.K. are saying this game looks phenomenal and puts other high def games to shames (i.e. Wipeout HD may be the benchmark for true 1080p games). The only downside they are saying is you are getting essentially the same game as Wipeout Pure. Small price to pay if you ask me (especially since I don't have a PSP).
