Cable broadband is beating DSL

This is old news and the direct consequence of greedy telcos thinking they can get away with nearly doubling the price of their intro DSL tiers.

When telcos ran the cheap tiers, they kicked cables' ass »AT&T: 383k Broadband Adds in Q4 . Just goes to show once again that price is king. It's certainly why telcos are bleeding voice customers to cable »Cable Vs. DSL

"It’s an experience effect," says Piper. "The more that consumers can do with higher speeds the more they want it."

Naw... cheap used to be king, speed is quickly becoming what people want.
More and more, people have the "Want it now" attitude.
768k - 1.5mbps DSL aint cutting it.
Price is being pounded by larger files and buffering videos.

You may think screw price, but just look at the tiers people are buying. FiOS for example...they're buying the slower tier. Same with cable. They're not buying those extreme tiers, they're buying basic tiers.

Price is now and always will be king.

Lowest priced tiers - but what are the speeds they are getting?
768k?
1.5mbps?
4mbps?
6?

El Cheapo DSL is sucking wind - regardless of it being $14.95.
Cheapest Comcast is $42.95, right?

Speed is dominating in new customer adoption.
If price was king, dialup would be ruling @ $9.99
Speed my friend... speed.

The thing about these DSL adds is that Verizon and at&t are updating to technologies beyond DSL. A lot of the subs they're losing in DSL are going to U-Verse (which is technically DSL, but is usually separated from traditional ADSL) and FiOS, which isn't really a net loss from the telco's perspective (well, they may make more money off of the DSL customer, but that's a different story than net adds). Meanwhile they're heavily promoting the new products to the exclusion of the old DSL, even in areas where deployment of the new technology is not 100% (i.e. all of them, essentially). So it's not surprising that DSL adds are down- after all, they're essentially abandoning it.

Speed my friend... speed.
You know for many people 768 kbps is plenty fast enough. Dial-up is horrible. 768 kbps is 14 times fasters. HUGE difference. My mother doesn't do any downloading. She doesn't visit any video streaming sites. Frankly for her to pay $50 a month for 10 Mbps from Charter would be a huge waste of money when she can get 768 kbps from at&t for $15-$20 a month and not really notice any difference.

price and speed both matter. well getting the speed you actually pay for matters most. I pay 40 for 7186 kbps. 18 hours of the day I have an average 2000 kbps...where the hell does the other 5000 go? who knows (I know its not people surfing the net because most are at work). I wouldn't be annoyed as much if I at least got 5000 out of the 7186 that I pay for...

for example the time is 2:23AM during a work week:

Cablevision is too expensive. They've raised their prices over the years, while DSL prices have dropped overall.

I can't afford $45 per month for Cablevision's Internet service, no matter how fast it is. My 3 Mbps DSL costs $32 per month.

Cablevision called me again last night, at dinnertime. I hung up on the bastards.

When people call us they almost always have two things on their mind. How much does it cost and does it work reliably. Where are these super cheap rates from Comcast? We get calls every day from people who complain that Comcast does not work reliably and that it is too expensive. When I ask how much they are paying they say they are paying 50 bucks for their internet.
