Networking printer with FIOS

I am having some trouble networking my printer with FIOS network. Here is my setup. I have an XP based desktop that has a printer installed on it. I have a VISTA laptop and a wireless network which is working fine for file sharing and internet use (networked through the FIOS router). I shared the printer on the desktop XP machine. When I try to either locate the printer on the laptop or type in the \\network\printer address, it is not found. Anything special I need to do with my firewall or some other setting? I read a bunch of help sites and people generally don't seem to have issues but I sure as heck am...Any advice is appreciated as always!

Try adding .local or .home after the \\network part, so \\network.home\printer or \\network.local\printer

But, you also might want to post this in another forum, it's not really a FiOS question and you'd probably get more responses.

Did you put the printer drivers on the laptop? You search for the printer in Control Panel > Printers. If the laptop can share with the desktop, it should find the printer.

The desktop has to be set to share the printer, as it acts as a print server.

If it's a network printer (ethernet connection), the printer drivers on the laptop should do the discovery of the printer, which should have a static IP.

This is not FIOS or MS related, and would probably solve fastest in »Computer Hardware Help where they do this everyday.

A firewall issue would usually prompt you that something is trying to gain access, and asks if it should be allowed. Never ran the MS OS firewall, don't know if it would prompt.

Also, what make/model printer is it? Are compatible Vista drivers available?

One thing that seems to work when sharing a printer between XP and Vista is add the printer as a "local printer".
