| Issues with ATI drivers
I've been having some really annoying issues with what I think are ATI drivers. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on an HD 4850. Previously had an Nvidia card, and I'm encountering X crashses when playing movies. Audio always works fine. It seems that Totem is a bit more susceptible to it than VLC, but it still happens every now and then. I can't find anything in the logs, but basically as soon as I open an avi file it takes me to a text shell where I see X restarting.
Any ideas? |

| Yep. ATI drools Nvidia rules. A $50 nvidia card will play video smooth as glass, while my $300 ATI card shudders, flashes, or whatever else you want to call it. Pretty much useless.
Google around. You'll be as amazed as I was a couple weeks ago, when I found out just how bad the ATI linux drivers *still* are.
Apparently this feature has existed for a couple years.
Not that it helps you much, but you're not alone.

If nvidia is still the same as it was before, you will have to properly clean it up by deleting any files/configs it left behind as some apps auto-configure itself by checking for certain files (libs, modules, etc). OP's problem is probably caused by softwae conflict due to nvidia crap it left behind. Ati drivers are pretty bad, but they are cleaner compare to nvidia's. A lot of people don't realize that nvidia is just as bad as Ati, if not worse, just because nvidia drivers are "functioning" better. |

I only use ati cards never had a problem, as far as Nvidia rules they rule in the amount of computers they have burnt up, last I read it was going to cost the company around 200 million to fix the damage their cards caused.

| Alright, I'm having some major issues getting my screen res to set. I had tried changing drivers, ran into some issues and would like to go back to fglrx.
I have the restricted drivers, xorg-driver-fglrx installed, and have fglrx specified as the driver in xorg.conf. However, fglrxinfo shows that it's using Mesa for some reason.
My screen appears to not be detected with the right resolution until I have the driver installed - so I am running at 800x600 now :-/ It keeps bringing up the "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode" whenever I start. |

| I have no ideal how Ubuntu installs drivers, I use pclinuxos gnome version. I go to »ati.amd.com/support/driver.HTML
select the driver for my card, download to Desktop.
open console cd Desktop
su
password
sh ./ ati-driver-installer-8-8-x86.x86_64.run
allow driver to install
at the end of install I type aticonfig, this displays several options I choose the option I want, which is option 1. aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf
I copy and paste that option in console and then reboot.
Never had a problem.

This is a long known issue with ATI cards. They do not properly support overlay for video rendering.
Turn off compiz, or use opengl, or xshm to render the video.
However, fglrxinfo shows that it's using Mesa for some reason.

ATI cards can work well for high FPS in some games, but stability with laptops, and video playback seem to be an issue. But hey, at least with open code, we now have 2 drivers that don't work  |

ATI machine and moving (upgrade) from (no problems) 7.x to 8.04 BIG problems/mistake... mostly audio but also video... went back to 7.x all is good again. (Almost WIN upgrade type of problems... the working drivers were all there, but replaced with problematic generics seemingly and why? Idon't think there was any major bus bit change or anything that would mandate that kind of thing)
Larger problem is 8.04 was just not ready for prime time... as 08 is almost over maybe the community will get it right on 09 9.x
Even the Gurus admited 8 was barely out of Beta when (prematurely) released as the new great thing. Hopefully they will do better on the next round, or possibly 8 update before years end.

I'm running 8.04 on three machines. Two have nvidia cards. The third has an ATI card. Which cannot run video overlay with compiz? The ati.
Other then that, there have been no problems with 8.04.
And if you google around, you'll see it's clearly the driver, not the distro that has the problem. You'll also see that it's a problem ATI has known about and not addressed in their linux driver for quite a while now.
But that's just my experience.
Agreed the mesa issue is fixable. Just follow any of the fixing mesa under ati pages. And turn off compiz if you want to have some kind of video. I've got mine so it's at least visible if I run video in vlc non-fullscreen, which is better then a big black square, at least. |

I really don't understand your problem compiz works flawlessly for me, I don't use it but have installed it just to test. I think the problem is perhaps your distro not the graphic card.
fglrxinfo shows that it's using Mesa for some reason never seen that, but I see from your links what distro it is, so again I think the blame is the distro not the card.

This is quite different then the way I install them in my distro, if you have disregard, if not you might want to try them.

Catalyst control center says Driver is version 8.52.3
I'm current. That is the version 8.8 currently available for download. If I run a 1080i or 720p video full screen, I get the crappy performance others get with compiz enabled.
Under KNOWN ISSUES for the current driver on the ATI page:

| I actually upgraded to 8.10 as I wanted to try it anyways last night and it solved my res issue. Looks like it's using an opensource driver (fglrxinfo returns Mesa), so I might try the radeon driver, as fglrx doesn't appear to be available for 8.10 yet. |

My 4 year old Dell has an ATI video card. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 and have no problems. All I did was enable "restricted drivers" and Ubuntu installed ATI drivers automatically (I assume).

Not sure what went wrong, but at least my monitor is correctly detected now. |
