| ntoskrnl.exe file corrupted or missing
Hello,
First time in here ... applogies if this is in wrong place.
I am getting the "Windows could not start becasue the following file is mising or corrupt: ...windows root\system32\ntoskrnl.exe" ... message.
i can't open in any safe modes, and I am having difficulties with my XP home re install disk. I have been trying to copy the file from the d: over to the C: but I am getting an access denied response.
Here is what I am working with;
Dell Inspiron 8600; Pentium M 1.5Ghz/600 Mhz; upgraded to 2 (1)GB Ram; 80GB HD XP home - came with Laptop AVG current on updates Spybot - just updated to 1.6 I think?
This is how things unfolded: I was noticing things were slow .... ran AVG, no problems .... ran spybot, it froze .... ran spybot again .... found several infection .... (I remember one of them being something like virtumonde and a trojan c ... )tried to "fix" and it froze up 3 times .... rebooted and realized I needed to update... installed new version .... hit restart .. and then Windows began unstalling (9 I think) updates that I was hanging onto. Once back up and running .... ran sybot again .... same viruses found ... same freezing .... then .... blue screen.
What can I do .... I am having a hard time finding info specific to this error. Can any of you help? Point me in the right direction?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Thanks for the info ..... however, not sure exactly how that is going to help me, you or anyone else at this point as I can't access, load, or run any of the items in the FAQ list. This is why I listed what happened and what scans I had run prior to the crash.
Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

| reply to abc123456 Hey Cudni,
Thannks for the suggestion. I am trying this and am not having any luck with it.
I have tried 2 different XP disks. One of them is the "reinstallation" disk that came with the laptop (I think). The 2nd is a (ooh, I am now just noticing) a XP home edition "upgrade" disk .... this might explain why this one is not working. Uh ... looking closer at the 1st disk, this is a "professional" and not a "home" version of XP. Will that make a difference?
Is there a way I can copy this ntoskrnl.exe file from another computer .... and using DOS put it onto a disk and then copy into my c: dive??
Or can I perhaps take a hard drive I took out and replaced .... use it as am external HD ...(which stll has windows home edition on it) ... and copy the files over that way using DOS?
I am thinking I might just take out the existing HD .... set it up as an External HD .... put my original HD back into the laptop and access the bad HD's files .... grab what I need ... then reformat and maybe do a mirror image of the original HD and then put that back into the laptop???
Thoughts??
Thanks again for any help you can give,

that sounds good but check the disk for errors first (chkdsk) before putting it back

@rr.com | reply to abc123456 I will give this a try .... and let you know how it goes.
Would you happen to know why we just can't copy a file like this ntoskrnl.exe into our c drives? Seems like it should be something super easy to do? |

| reply to abc123456 Run chkdsk/f on the drive in the other system and then re-try in the original machine. This has fixed the same problem for me many times. Similarly, running chkdsk/f often is good prevention even when the system appears to be trouble free. -- I didn't inhale . . . . . Bill Clinton |
