[OC] Not so great Q6600

I recently picked up a Q6600 SLACR G0 stepping CPU, but i dont think its from a good stock. I havent had time to tweak it yet, but i bumped the FSB to 333 (3.0ghz) briefly on stock voltage (vcore=1.25) and it crashed after about 10 minutes of usage.

I use to have a E6300 1.8ghz @ 3.0ghz in the system (with the same memory) running stable at +.05v for more than a year.. but the Q6600 i picked up wouldn't do 3.0ghz on stock voltage.

Maybe i got a dud?

Mine can run 3.6GHz with no problem... Currently running at 3.4GHz .. at 1.26v (load) ...due to ambient temp ...

my vcore is 1.120 and i'm running at 3.06Ghz stable on an Abit ip35 pro. maybe you just got a bum chip? i'd say RMA it.......maybe you'll get a better OC'er.

do you guys have speedstep (variable multiplier) enabled? im suspecting thats what's crashing my system.

at 1.30v 3.0ghz it runs Prime95 (for about 20 minutes) without issues, but when i play games i still get random reboots. I bumped the voltage to 1.32v, still the same. I'm thinking possibly when speedstep kicks in the v/ghz ratio is unstable.

on my other 2 OC'd systems speedstep is enabled, but they run fine.

i have it enabled on mine.

quick question---what HSF are you using? i didn't see any mention if you're using the stocker or not. i got the arctic cooling freezer pro 7 with AS5 thermal paste and it made a huge difference on my temps. maybe you're crashing in games from overheating?

my temps are okay.. not great, but okay. I use a Zalman 9700NT. I have a constant temperature monitor on my CPU via my G15 LCD. it runs a bit hot sometimes, about 57-58C under load, but i'd imagine thats well within operation temps on the kentsfield.

What kind of core temps? What cooling? I can run the Everest stress test and get thermal throttling at 100% load within 3 minutes. I would be very surprised if you were running at 100% load without thermal throttling at that speed.

I'm running at 3.2 GHz (9x356) without any thermal throttling, but my box is in the basement where the ambient temps are ~23-24 C so it's relatively cool. Idle temps are in the mid to high 30s C and under load high 40s to low 50s C, so I can't imagine thermal throttling is coming into play.

That's about the same as mine. You can't tell if thermal throttling is in play unless you run the Everest stress test, though.

Sure I can. It's doing the same amount of work in the same amount of time as it does immediate after I run something against all 4 cores. I also have all of the speed throttling, C1E, etc turned off in my BIOS.

Core temps are Max 55c Avg. 53c .With the M Board Temps 45c/43c .

Cooling is Tuniq Tower 120 Lapped with a Yate Loon High Speed 120mm Fan (40dBa, 88CFM »www.xoxide.com/yate-loon-highspeed-120.html

Now as for the Thermal throttling I can say for a fact that I have it turned off in /bios but I believe it is .

If you turn it off, fine. But you can't turn off thermal throttling, I don't think. It hits 99C and it's automatic.

I'm not coming anywhere near 100 C.
