Verizon FIOS TV will go down 09-08-08 unless I go digital!!!

Anyone else received a letter stating that in order to continue to receive FIOS TV the suscriber needs to get a DIGITAL TV or a digital converter from Verizon.

OOOPS!!!! I forgot! looks like I will be with out TV for a few days...

The letter states if I have a Verizon tv box or cable card I wont affected. I only have the basic over the air package for $14 a month. (I know... people die for FIOS yet I only use it for basic, most TV shows come under the basic channels)

It staes I can get FREE digital convertors until 09-11-08. I am thinking if I might get to keep the FREE digital adapters to use on my Vista Media center PC with 2 analog TV tuner cards. If I can keep them they will be nice until I can buy DIGITAL tuners for use with Vista Media Center.

Then again I might go to Time Warner if they still have analog cable.

But why? By next February you will need one...so why not now and get it over with?

  (sigh)

How Do I Receive Digital Broadcasts If I Subscribe To Cable Or Satellite?

If you receive cable or satellite television service, contact your cable or satellite provider about any additional components, such as a digital set-top box, that you may need to watch digital broadcast programming.

Your right I will call them first thing tomorrow morning when they open.

I knew it was coming but I must have read it wrong and didn't catch the part about Verizon getting me free digital adapters.

Digital adapter is just a fancy name for a no frills cable box.

Sigh. The analog shutdown next February 17, 2009 only applies to full power broadcast stations. Does not apply to analog cable systems - which may go digital, but that is the decision of the local cable franchise.

But how could anyone miss the news that Verizon was going all digital if they read this forum at all? It has been a dominant topic since last April when Verizon started the process. A DCT700 STB will get a lot more SD channels than just the 2-49 channel set.

I am not really a TV aficionado, I have basic TV, but will be updating to HD digital tuners (when I see some good tuners for HD TV and Media Center, after using it will never use any cable company box)for over the air free HD TV.

When you call, make sure you order from the 800-GO-DIGITAL number that's on the letter. Otherwise, you'll end up adding it for a fee. And you'll really have to jump through hoops to get that fixed.

And don't sell them if you buy other boxes, because they're only free as long as you reside at your current address.

What!!!! I have to return them when I dont have Verizon Fios TV??? I only wanted them cause they were Free.

I am not going to be using some cheap Verizon cable box to change channels! and leave my Vista Media Center DVR!

That sucks I will cancel the order and move to Time Warner were they still have analog cable.

Will have to call Verizon to verify this info.

Uhm. Er. Yes, they're rent-free. So yes, you would have to return them if you move.

Have fun with TW!

What do you mean have fun with TW?

For $14 a month for broadcast basic... what is not to like dislike?

Channels 2-13, done.

Torrents it will be if I cant get basic TV, since the mountains block the over the air TV stations.

Actually its better quality than Verizon cable and they auto download on the east coast time so i see them before they come out live.

What FiOS TV package do you currently have? Premier?

You can always just go with the FiOS TV Local package for $12.99 and just get your local channels if that's all you watch. Plus, you can then keep those 3 free digital adapters that you'll need to get from TW or any other TV provider. I think that's the way to go if you only watch local channels...

Make sure you find out if TW has any plans to drop the analog, because eventually they will. (Well, ok, I don't have any inside info, but it's a safe bet they'll be looking to use bandwidth differently.)

I know that my Slingbox has a IR control so it changes the channel on the DCT-700 as if I had been using the remote control. Is there nothing like that for a Vista Media Center DVR?
