Transfer switch

I am looking for a whole house transfer switch (manual)
For a Generator. 200amp double pole double throw. What i wnat to do is come out of the meter to the switch, Then to the panel.
I have had a multi cicuit switch at another house that i put in and it worked great. But i dont want to limit usage to just a few circuits and the hassel of putting one of them in.
My searching has not been friutful

What panel do you have?

We just put in a square D panel and you can buy just that to be put in the panel. It's called the generator interlock.

Panel. sorry 4 crappy cell pic
Here is the panel i have now. a 150amp breaker. The box is a Murray. The main feed comes in from the bottom and runs up the left side. I have room to the left of the panel to put the switch. I would reall like something that has a built in socket for the generator.

You'll likely have to run a short conduit from the transfer switch to a box housing a receptacle for the generator.

EDIT: They also have these to add to the transfer switches: »www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com···703.html

Thats what i want to do. Have th feed from the meter go in to a manual switch. Has to be rated for at least 150a. Then i could mount next to the switch the plug for the generator. The PLug i know i can find. The switch i have had no luck with.

200A Transfer Switch: »www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com···125.html
50A Power Inlet Kit: »www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com···703.html

You could also look for a local Reliance Controls distributor.

Those aren't what i want. Those are load panels. They are actually bigger than my current panel. 39" long. I don't want to replace my panel just add an external switch box.

I'm confused would you put it in the panel if available space is there? Or Does it have to be separate?

I think you want this, but I'm not sure.

ebay usually has them. they are a dual pole, ON-OFF-ON switch. i need one myself, but don't have an extra 300 or so to spend on it right now. i saw them go as low as 125 before, but at the time i did not need it!

Any electrical supply house will have a decent manual two-pole, 200A transfer switch that is rated for at least 240V. They are made by Sqaure-D, Eaton Cuttler-Hammer, Siemens, etc. If they don't have a two-pole in stock, you can use the outside poles of a three-pole switch.

»cgi.ebay.com/NEW-200-Amp-Generat···ViewItem just search "manual transfer switch" and several come up. for some reason if you try to limit it to a 200a they won't show.

I agree with the others who suggest looking on eBay..I recently bought a portable generator and asked here in the forum about switches and eBay was recommended..

I went there and after looking around a lot got this one for $140.00 Guy upgraded so that is why he sold it..perfect condition he claims...which I will find out shortly.

Should be no big deal...

You're looking for a DPDT "Break before make" switch... Very common in commercial use. Any electrical supplier (and no, I don't mean big Orange, I mean a real supplier, where electricians would shop) - should have them.

You do, however, need to get one rated for "Service Entrance Use" if you're going to install it between your meter base and your panel (which is exactly what I think you plan on...)

For Instance - something on this page should do the trick...

EDIT - What size generator are you planning on using; and how will it be connected, anyways?

You can use a Interlock kit in your existing panel.

I would suggest a new main panel with room for at least a dozen breakers. You put a large breaker in the new panel and run the service to your transfer switch, and then from the transfer switch to your existing panel.

This method will make the electrical inspection much easier to pass. It gives you a main disconnect, that is probably required by code, and lets you perform any future maintenance or upgrades without involving the electric company.
