| [OOL] OOL Wifi
I just saw the commercial and checked out the map, probably end up doing some war driving tomorrow.
Anyway how does this work, it seems that the coverage map is like a spotted dog, coverage here, not for a few blocks, then coverage again, I live in Valley Stream. |

| My area is not covered but a few blocks down from me is and all the way down the road as well. I don't think they are doing my area with WIFI because I am on the county border that OOL does not service. I have the triple play with them and wouldn't surprise me if they didn't do it here. -- »www.gamevee.com/user/Vyrax/videos |

| reply to KeithF40 It works like this: After you connect and open your browser you will be directed to an address looking like this...(don't bother clicking on this as you can only see it when connected to the wifi network) »https://apc.aptilo.com/pas/optonline/welcome.... You put in your OOL email nick/name, pass word and check off the Agreement box. After this a window will open that you must keep open to stay logged in, a new home page window will open as well. That's it! |

| reply to KeithF40 Coverage is located in high traffic areas. For my area here in Glen Head there is a WiFi node near our community center, at the railroad station, the Waldbaums shopping center on Glen Cove Road, the shopping areas on Glen Head Road and Glen Cove Avenue and North Shore High School.
They have not yet put any where large numbers of people would not congregate such as Glenwood Landing since what is the point in paying $500 or so to install a single WiFi node and only two people use it? -- I support the right to keep and arm bears. |

| reply to KeithF40 What I am curious about ...will they ever get 100% (or close to it) signal saturation? It would be nice to be able to stream internet radio or TV while in the car or on the train.
I tried streaming XM radio online on Sunrise Hwy but there were too many dead spots. |

| I had thought the plan was to have 100% of all area's that have OOL to be completely covered within 2 years. But it looks like it will only be in hi traffic areas.

"The service covers high-traffic community zones in Nassau County and in some areas of Suffolk County, as well as on commuter rail platforms and parking lots across Long Island. The Wi-Fi service is available without additional charge to Cablevision's Optimum broadband customers. " |

| Customers in range of it LOL My area is the same as the few blocks away from me where they stopped and has the same amount of traffic, stores and houses.
Even though it says high traffic areas it also says
The Long Island deployment is the vanguard of Cablevision's $310 million project to provide Wi-Fi service to its 2.4 million Internet customers in its New York-New Jersey-Connecticut tristate service area.

| reply to Gungerdin i guess OOL does not know that verizon tried doing wifi hotspots on top of payphone years ago and then stopped offering it because it was unsucessful! sadly this attempt by OOL to try to keep customers from going to fios will be a failure and costs passed along to OOL customers. |

| reply to KeithF40 I think the OOL wi-fi service has a good chance of success. The only issue I see is that there will be no coverage in NYC, where many CV customers work. But it's a nice thing to have when out and about, especially if you have an iPhone or a wi-fi enabled T-Mobile device that you can use for voice and data over wi-fi. |

| reply to KeithF40 There are many more public wifi spots in the city. Plus you are mostly underground in subway or at your desk so probably doesn't help as much. Would be nice to have wifi while driving, and that driving is really happening on the island more. How are these speeds compared to a mobile broadband card. |

| I was told by a CV tech that did an installation that they plan to eventually offer video and voice service via wireless technology that would eliminate the need for them to troubleshoot bad wiring. So it seems this would be the first step... get the infrastructure built... then figure out how to transmit large amounts of video. I would assume they would be doing some kind of multicasting to accomplish that... but it would be neat to not have to worry about signal levels and bad splitters anymore. |

| said by jaa :My guess is nothing. I would agree with that. It seems as if they are concentrating deployment on more densely populated area and business centers. Also mass transit facilities seem to be getting some Wifi love too. Unless you go to light poles, etc. I don't know how you manage to cover an urban center like downtown White Plains or Stamford.
I live in a residential area with underground utilities. I don't hold out a lot of hope that they ever put anything in my neighborhood. Sticking access points in the pedestals and Alpha boxes won't get them very much coverage. They have done the area around the schools and business districts nearby, however. |
