| [Wireless/Satellite] Help with unusual wireless router on Vista
Sorry for the attachment of a screenshot. I'm so tired, I can't figure out how to paste a photo of what I need you to look at, sorry!
Here's the problem: I have a network. Security is tight. It has been tested. Nothing is "leaking" out. I have a XP desktop wired to the router. Avg d/l speeds: 20 mb/s. I have a Vista wireless notebook sitting six inches away from the desktop and one foot away from the router (they are all on the same desk). Avg d/l speeds: 6 mb/s. When I plug a cat-5 cable from the laptop to the router, avg d/l speeds: 20 mb/s.
I have downloaded and installed all manufacturer drivers and firmware for all hardware and router. Reset, rebooted, etc. No difference. Problem is this: My wireless LAN in my gateway notebook is a "Realtek 8185 Extensible 802.11b/g Wireless Device" and the attached file shows you the only things I can change. The receive buffer can only go from 1-128, the transmit buffer can only be from 1-64. There is no utility for this darn LAN.
Can you give me advice?
Thanks!

Hello neighbor!
One of the main issues is that you are running in a mixed mode on the wireless (B & G). In a mixed mode, it is going to default to the lowest one (B). Don't expect much more than what you are getting.
You need to get an adapter (G) and use that on the laptop. Change the router setting to "G only" and see what you get. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |

| Thank you for your reply. I am running a stock gateway-installed router. I tried opening the case once, to not-so-good results.
When you say, "get an adapter", are you talking abot an external adapter? If so, I have no space to plug it in except a USB 1.0 port. Will this increase my speeds any? Or shall I take it to a repair tech and get a new wireless LAN installed inside the computer?
Is there a utility I can use to select G only as my wiress mode? I finally got the Realtek utility installed today, and it's not very good.
Thanks!

| Yes, a wireless external adapter (G mode). I don't know what results you will get off a USB 1.0 port, but it should be better than what you are getting.
You can try one of hose PC repair places and see what they want to replace your existing internal adapter.
In the router, there is a setting for the wireless mode. Just login into the router and change it.
After thought ... reread your post ... is your existing device a capable of G speeds? Then just check the router to make sure it is set to G only and not B/G. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |

| Thanks for the reply. In my router, I have previously selected "G Only" as the network's preferred connection type. I guess that means that I'm getting the best I can get out of my internal wireless LAN. That sucks!
I will go down to Fry's and see what an adapter costs or PC Club for installing an internal adapter.
Thanks for your help!

| What router do you have?
Have you updated the adapter's driver?
What is your signal strength when connected wireless?
If WEP is on in the router, turn it off. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |
