i'm having my install done today, and was told by the tech doing the install that he can not enable the cat5 connection on the ONT anymore in NYC, is this true? |

I had my install done two weeks ago with Cat5 wiring in Queens NY. That is just BS coming from the tech.  Setting up the router and acquiring an IP address is done by running a script that is plugged into a USB port on your PC. I would not let them tell me that MoCA is the only way to go. |

I was given the choice. I actually ran a prefab CAT 6 cable from the planned location for the inside version of the ONT to where my router is installed in advance. Tech was delighted to install using the Ethernet connection. |

That flash has not made it to my garage. MoCA(coax) is the preferred data connection on residential installs, but we have the discretion to change to ethernet. As mentioned by others, the data port can be changed by calling into Verizon. On behalf of the installer, he may have been misled or misunderstood a directive given by management. I hope that is all it was. |

If doesn't use cat5/6, what other option does he have to give you? a fiber cable? I would have ask for the guy informaion and call for a supervisor. |

Choice is coax cable (MOCA) or cat5 cable that'll go to the Actiontec router. Coax is preferred because they can then try to sell you TV service with it (and the Coax is required for that). In my case it was easily ten times easier for him to use my pre-existing CAT5 runs (leftover from DSL setup before) than run Coax and if he ran coax it would have been useless for TV (we just had three DirecTV DVR's installed in the far reaches of our 2-story house and still have nearly 2 years of commitment for it). He had zero problems with that and installed the CAT-5 method. |

I ran the Cat5e a weekend prior to my install date. The tech's were as happy as could be.
Needless to say they were talking to me the whole time, i even gave them water (it was hot out) and the supervisor came out to the install and they even offered to buy me lunch (the supervisor was running to quickcheck to buy them some food/drinks) but i respectfully declined.
This was when Fios was brand new to my area I was house #2 (i think) on the block to get it. I had 2 techs installing the connection.
What a great day haha.

No that is not the reason at all, the CAT5 has nothing to do with getting video service. Most homes are wired with coax in mostly every room and since it is already there it makes for a quicker install for the techs and less disruption to the customer or the possibility of damage to the home (putting a hole where it shouldn't be, ooops!). |

they sendin me the DTC700 a samller less functional STB that I will hook the COAX into that they originally ran.....the cat5e is ONLY internet and runs straight from ONT to my comp the COAX they origianlly installed will go to the DTC700 which is NOT a router it is a STB |

I am aware of that. You said they could not do Cat-5 from ONT to router if you have video service. This is INCORRECT. As I stated, they can do Cat5 from ONT to router they would then plug your coax into the coax LAN port of the Actiontec. This gives your STBs the guide info and VOD.
Hence, CAT5 can be used at ONT if you have video service. |

It is a hardware restriction on the ONT... |
