[Leo] 10.5.5 is getting close

From AppleInsider:

Mac OS X 10.5.5 approaching as testing focus narrowed

By Slash Lane
Published: 10:40 AM EST

A release of the fifth maintenance and security update for Apple's Leopard operating system appears to be approaching a release, with the company reported to have lopped the number components requiring evaluation in half.

Developers claim to have received their pre-weekend build of the upcoming Mac OS X 10.5.5 Update on Thursday evening. The new build, labeled 9F32, arrived just days after a smaller subset of developers were equipped with build 9F30, which similarly followed on the heels of build 9F29 distributed more broadly near the start of the week.

With the latest build, Apple has narrowed its testing field from 24 core system components to just 12, according to people familiar with the software. Among the components still in need of further testing are AirPort, graphics drivers, iCal, iChat, screen sharing, and Time Machine, those people say.

Build 9F32 is also reported to have stemmed a nasty memory glitch that was affecting Time Machine's volumes formatted in HFS. A problem using the CUPS printing environment with documents Apple's Preview application is also said to have been fixed.

While Mac OS X 10.5.5 remains hampered by a single known issue related to email search in the company's Mail application, the narrowed focus list combined with more rapid test releases over the past week has led some developers to believe the Update may only be a week or so away.

Only once in recent memory has the Mac maker shaved a large number of components from the focus areas of an impending Mac OS X update late in its development cycle and then spun around to re-broaden them.

Mac OS X 10.5.5 currently weighs in at around 320 megabytes in its bare bones Delta form, those familiar with the software say.

Really? Probably joking, but if that is true, then I will give up my Crackberry, that is one missing feature I am holding back from getting an iPhone.

We just have to figure out how to get 10.5.5 onto the iPhone first.

Re: [Leo] 10.5.5 is getting close

I was going to pull the trigger on Leopard, but have officially decided to wait on the snow thing - unless a ridiculously low-priced retail dvd comes along on ebay during one of my time-killing sessions there.

I have far too much stuff on my Tiger machines, including two macheist app fests, to futz with an upgrade this time around. Speaking of which:

all but one app unlocked and four days to go!

It'll probably get released tomorrow along with iTunes 8.

Tomorrow would be an awesome day if we got, itunes 8, OS 10.5.5, iPhone 2.1, and a new iPod!

Its a little scary to think Apple would release all those things at the same time when in the past year they've screwed up the release of the 3G iPhone and MobileMe

^(Not necessarily my opinion!)^

Unlike MobileMe, which was an utter disaster, iTunes and the OS go through a lot of rigorous testing. When it comes to the hardware side of things, it usually takes a few days before people start discovering issues. I really do think that iTunes 8 will be bundled with the OS update, but I don't have exactly a stellar track record when it comes to predictions, so take it with a grain of salt.

I hope new iPhone software gets released today, every time I plug in my iPhone 3G to sync it I get asked if I want to restore it.

We'll have to wait and see. Today should be the day. What makes sense to me is that if their OS is solid , which it is, then hopefully their OS update is solid as well. I'm relatively new to mac computers so I don't have a history with them but I have been usuing iTunes for a while and I like it

Why is it when one person has a problem with their device, its clearly a bug in the OS, rather than just a problem in that device?

I didn't say it wasn't a problem with the device, I just wanted to re-set it up with the new software. I know I'll have to wipe it clean, I just didn't want to have to do it twice. I also don't want to lose the data stored in my apps on my iPHone so maybe the new software version will auto-magically fix my problems?

The week is not over yet, but I am guessing that 10.5.5 will not be out this week, since they released a number of other updates. Next week seems more likely to me.

Yep, Far, far too much. Upgrading would only break my apps plus cause assorted other aggravations I don't need (see any MacFixit page).
