| Mint help: Speakers gone after update!!
I got here a pair of Altec Lansing XT1 USB audio and stopped working after one of the last updates.
The last one I didn't select preference level 3. Should I try just in case it works.
If not, is there anyone know how to enable sound again via speakers.
I always had problems with Ubuntu/Mint after certain updates, they just wreck my speakers
This issue is a real biatch, lol!
Using latest version 5.0.
Thanks in advance.

| I've never run Mint, I run SuSE, but my experience over the past 5 years is if an update breaks something, generally wait a week or two and the next update will prolly fix it...
Sorry I can't offer any immediate fixes, but sometimes being patient is the only solution...

What did you update? |

| reply to Psicop No idea. How do I find out this stuff?
It wasn't the last update, it was the major one after I installed Mint's latest version back in July this year.
So there has been time to fix this but it this hasn't been the case.
Thanks. |

| lsmod will list the modules loaded. If the proper module isn't loading it won't tell you. Ideally, you'd know what hardware you have and what module is required.
I don't know Mint, but there must be a log for the package manager so you can see what you updated.
Post the output of lsmod, the relevant bits of dmesg and the package manager log.
Lesson #4: Don't indiscriminately install things unless you know what you're installing and why. Applies across operating environments. |

OK, could you show me the steps to do that? Thanks. |

| Type lsmod in a terminal. Copy the output. Paste it in a browser.
Type dmesg in a terminal. Copy the lines related to the USB devices. Paste them into a browser.
Look in /var/log for something that looks like a log for your package manager - whatever that is. You obviously used it to update, so you must know what it's called. Synaptic, apt-get, whatever, there should be a log of what packages were updated and when. |

| reply to Psicop I had the same problem going from Umbuntu 7x to 8x.
Some how the sound drivers didn't follow or were incompatible.. no big deal new features in 8x for me so just went back to 7x and all is good again. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

I'm not posting the September log since the issue happened in July.
Thanks again. |

| Good. Thanks for taking the time to do that.
Here are things that I see:
There was no kernel upgrade. That's on of the most common reasons for things to get broken. We know from this info that you're not dealing with a new set of modules.
The sound modules are loaded.
There's no problem with the section of dmesg that you posted.
Can you unplug then plug in the speakers and post the output of "tail dmesg" ? That will tell you how the system is responding on seeing the device in case there's an error not seens in the snip shown.
Also, double-check your mixer. You had a big GNOME update on 7/13 and it could simply be that one of the mixer settings got stepped on. |

| reply to Psicop I did a Google search for the command "tail dmesg" because when I entered it gave me the message "no such file or directory". The command is "dmesg | tail".
Anyway here's the output:

What are the correct settings for the mixer? I fiddled with them and none of the options I chose did work.
Currently I got them set as shown above.
Thanks one more time. |

I'd be looking for one of the controls muted or set to minimum. |

| reply to Psicop You were right. But I can't move the sliders!! They are like glued.
Ok managed to move them after sliding both down and then one at the time. However the problem is still there. No sound coming off the speakers.

No_Strings Premium,MVM join:2001-11-22 The OC | Try running the ALSA configuration utility:
sudo (or, as root) alsaconf
You'll get a text-based series of screens that will search for your hardware and configure the settings.
Beyond that, I'm out of suggestions. |

Psicop More human than human Premium join:2005-12-21 | reply to Psicop I tried sudo alsaconf & alsaconf both in root and non-root and it says "command no found".

  happylurk
@look.ca | alsaconf is usually found in /etc or /etc/alsa.d or /etc/init.d |

@look.ca | reply to Psicop Alternatively and easier way is to type
whereis alsoconf |

Psicop More human than human Premium join:2005-12-21 | reply to Psicop I searched using your advice and zilch.
Maybe it is not installed in here? Hence I need to install it in my system.
Thanks. |
