[Modem] Dead 2-Wire 2701 - Help to config a D-Link 2640b

At 5 am discovered the 2701 was showing a red light and (maybe) a warning sound. I powered the 2701 down and back on, lights on modem flickered then nothing from the modem. AT&T is replacing the 2701 via two day shipping ie: next week... The modem (I got AT&T last March) has a 1 year warranty, seemed like a power supply problem but the wall transformer is showing OK power readings.

I have a D-Link DSL-2640B, any info as to making it work with AT&T DSL (I have up to 6mps service) would be much appreciated, as would advice as to what is a good plan to avoid this once the 2-wire (or lack thereof) modem is replaced. I have backup for the PC, UPS & now I guess I need to consider the DSL modem.

After a not too long wait I got a dial up # hence this post,
any assistance is appreciated.

Looks pretty straightforward.

Set the DLink to PPPoE, put in your full login name (including the @sbcglobal.net or @att.net part) and your password.

If it can't figure it out on its own, use a VPI of 0 and a VCI of 35.

Should be good to go at that point.

Oh good grief, thanks so simple, just ignore all the other
options. Thanks again.

What DSL modem is the most reliable in your opinion?

Again thanks.

I'm not sure what other options you're talking about but at least these couple should get you connected.

I'm still a fan of the discontinued Speedstream modems, in fact, I have a little stash of them set aside in case any of my clients needs a replacement. The currently shipping Motorola seems, ehh, ok, although I'm concerned about the reports of it running hot.

I'm also not a fan of the 2wires, for exactly the reason you're here asking these questions. It's usually the power supply that dies, but it's not all that unusual for the modem to go belly up either.

Some of the setup options are: Enable quality of service, the VPI settings, enable 892, I left it off although I suspect it can be enabled. There are options for PPip extension, keep alive and other options I left as default. Probably the most important thing I did after getting your help was to reset the 2640 which I suspect eliminated the previous settings from trying to use the network wizard.

Your concerns about the Motorola mirror mine regarding the D-Link 2640B which seems very hot too me. I have it on a pedestal to help radiate the heat, will wait and see.

As for the 2-Wire I suspected the power supply but now figure it's a circuit problem from the power socket to the circuit board. Really poor quality control or design.

Thanks again for your assistance.
