| Linux on an old macbook g4....
has anyone done this before? I know there are versions for ppc hardware but I don't know how well they work or if the wireless will work and all that. we replaced my wifes old macbook with a brand spanking new one and we want to give the kids her old macbook and I'd like them to have linux.
Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.
Thanks! -- Mafia: »Pub Games Remember the golden rule of the internet..it's the place where men are men, women are also men, and children are the FBI. |

| reply to muzscman I've used Debian on PPC hardware a few times, it works well. I think the only trick I ran into was getting the partitioning right ("auto" took care of the Mac-specific pieces, then I backtracked and recreated my real partitions). -- Interested in open source engine management for your Subaru? |

| reply to muzscman Do you mean PowerBook G4 (PowerPC) or MacBook (Intel)? I'm assuming PowerBook as you mention PPC in your post. There are plenty of articles talking about installing Linux on PowerPC Macs:

| reply to Ctrl Alt Del it's a macbook g4. and it's ppc. it's about 5 years old. it has a gig of ram in it and i'm not sure about what speed the processor is.
i was looking at open suse but i didn't even know that ubuntu had a ppc version. i'll probably download that and give it a go....
i'll keep everyone updated. my biggest goal will to be to get the wireless working.... |

The name MacBook started when Apple switched to Intel. It's either an iBook or a PowerBook. On the Mac, right below the display it will literally tell you what it is: either iBook or PowerBook. To get the CPU speed, click on the Apple in the top left corner and select "About This Mac".

I run debian unstable on my powerbook. |

I got home from work on Friday and apparently my kids had gotten ahold of it and popped 5 of the buttons off. Two of them wouldn't go back on until I took the little plastic things under the keys off and fixed them but it's all good now.
Gunna download debian right now and burn it to a CD! |

| reply to muzscman Quick question. I'm on their download site and I see what looks like 22 cd's?? That can't be right. Am I missing something here??

| I take that back:
"The first CD/DVD disk contains all the files necessary to install a standard Debian system. To avoid needless downloads, please do not download other CD or DVD image files unless you know that you need packages on them."
Helps if I read everything before I post....duh.... |

| reply to muzscman Debian installed like a dream. It found the wireless nic. But I'm having a hard time connecting it to my router. I'm going to screw around with it for awhile tonight, but the debian install was amazingly easy and it runs like a dream on the ibook....
