Looks like for 3" pipe based on the figure inside. The sprinkler pipe was held in the round part ( there is a piece missing that would complete the circle ) and on the right is a connection point for a stud that would be attached to a beam that supports the sprinkler pipe.

No estimate on age as they were used since at least 1950 to present with very little change in design.

They are correct-it is an old style pipe hanger, manufactured by Grinnell.

Looks like something from a farm implement. In the 70's I worked on a 200 acre berry farm that had been farmed for many years and we found all kinds of metal as we cultivated and worked the ground.

In the boneyard there were all kinds of machines that were used and unrecognized to modern machines we were using.

Regarding the property - the school was built in the mid 1960s. Most of the land around here (and the school) was and in some cases, still is, farm land.

That water spout handle idea is certainly a possibility.

It's pretty heavy for the size. It measures 5 1/2 in length by 4 in wide. So too big for something like a bike brake.

Also there was construction at the school for the past 6 months - so, maybe some construction related thing?
