The sprinkler pipe was held in the round part ( there is a piece missing that would complete the circle ) and on the right is a connection point for a stud that would be attached to a beam that supports  the sprinkler pipe. <br><br>No estimate on age as they were used since at least 1950 to present with very little change in design.<br><br>Tim<br><small>--<br>The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits.</small>]]></description>

I've installed and removed quite a lot of them in my day. It measures 5 1/2 in length by 4 in wide.
