[Vista x64] Cannot find downloaded files

Bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium x64 SP1 but I cannot find any file I download. User acct is administator.

Things I've tried: Search for file. Disable UAC. Uninstall Antivirus. Try downloading with Firefox instead of IE. Download to Desktop. Enable see Hidden Files and Folders. Change user to Guest and search for file.

I can see/use any file already present on Usb stick, external HD or DVD drive as well as any copied to the laptop from the same. This is making me pull hair. Before I install Vista Ultimate X64 over it give some ideas how I can fix this.

The problem may be a third party program or service that loads at startup is affecting the downloads.

Try restarting the computer in Safe Mode with Networking or perform a "clean boot" of Vista - Step 1 in the following MS KB article:

»support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Then try to download and locate a file again.

In previous downloads yes I did. Although a file search should've found it also if present. In Safe mode I directed the file to download to Desktop.

Start -> RUN -> msconfig (enter)

Tools tab -> Disable UAC (launch)

reboot your machine and be happy.

I'll certainly try it when I get home but why wouldn't disabling thru Control Panel do the same thing? And Safe Mode should bypass UAC entirely right?

Using msconfig didn't help. I think a new install is in order.

I run Vista Ultimate 64bit.

When you download do you get the "Run Save Cancel" dialog?

Don't use the default location. Pick a spot -> c:\Users\Administrator\" then make a new folder. UN-check "close this... when finished." When dl completes, click "open folder/location (I forget which, s/b middle button.) See if you find the dl'd file.

Vista is confusing because it has shortcuts to places that used to be locations in XP and 2000.

i tried to uninstall my anti-virus, i had avg, it wasn't working like it should, uninstall your anti-virus and install a new one, the dialog box usually scans for viruses, this may present a conflict with the current anti-virus configuration and may corrupt the download file location process if that doesn't work try to uninstall any recent program that is some kind related to your internet browser this is of course a vista problem
