[modem/router] Modem Upgrade?

I have the 3mbps dsl service, and the westell 2200. Is it worth getting verizon to send me the newest modem? Will I see a speed increase? Also, what is fastpath?

My modem stats are as follows:

Transceiver Revision: 7.1.254
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT-Mode
Data Path: Fast
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 864
Margin (db) 15.5 12.0
Line Attenuation (db) 49.0 18.5
Transmit Power (db/Hz) 7.0 11.0

I dont know if these are good, but could i get faster speed if I switch from fastpath (which i think i have because the path says it is fast) Verizon says I cant get 7.1, but i really want it.

Also, recently when doing a speed test, it jumps all over(900-1500kbps), and is usually at about 2000kbps. My upload speed dosent jump, and is at about 700-750kbps. Same, slow results from verizons speedtest, and I will post a speetest.

There is no speed benefit to a newer modem unless the newer modem is ADSL2+ compatible, the DSLAM can do ADSL2/ADSL2+ and your line is marginal. Also the below thread will explain everything you need to know about FastPath. Otherwise, your line is in good shape as it is with the 2200 with a good margin, proper sync and with FastPath. If you want, you can post up a speed test and a trace route for us. One thing though, I'm wondering if something is attenuating the downstream a little bit as your upstream attenuation seems to be a bit low compared to your downstream.

Trace to nyc.speakeasy.net or dslreports.com . Those should give good results.

Nothing wrong with that line or modem. Stats are good for over 12,000'. I'm guessing you can test about 2800/710 kbps, which is good. No software needed installed, as the 2100 is a modem only, and your connection is DHCP

Try testing to another server and post up the result. If the moving ball or the tachometer is very jittery/freezes/stalls, you might want to post about this issue in the Verizon Direct forum so they can see what is going on before things get worse, if another nearby server and a west coast server show the same inconsistent results and/or a non-steady "ball" or tachometer. Otherwise, the upload and latency is fine.

Speedtests should always come from the closest reliable test server. They are only a subjective measure of your getting what you're paying for, and subject to the congestion of the internet. Go straight to »www.speakeasy.com and select the NY server.

2440/700 is not bad, considering another 1000' or 2000' could push you down to a 1.5M provision. I apologize for my optimism on the download. I often forget I was on 3300', and not 10,000'.

It's a good 'ole Juniper. Anyone want to place bets? Run a Line Quality Test. If at the last or second to last hop there is an ERX in the router name, you are on a Juniper. Drop your RWIN down to 13068 and your speeds will normalize. If however you are running Windows Vista, you are out of luck.

I did do the speakeasy NY test, the "tachometer" was shakey, and it only got to 2200kbps, I used to get 2800-3100kbpbs, any server.... this is a new indecent. All of those servers are different...

See my above post. Jumpy "tachs" are a good indication of what I described.

Ok to the line quality test, but a big "huh?" to the rest...

I am on vista, but with vista my speeds were fine until recently...

No hope for Vista unfortunately. Under normal circumstances a high RWIN is good for a broadband connection. However when you have a Juniper in the mix, the opposite is true. Up to XP, changing the RWIN isn't much of an issue. However with Vista everything changed and those settings no longer have any effect, and Vista's auto-tuning doesn't compensate.

why did verizon have to screw up my connection with their fancy hardware.....(not too fancy if you ask me, I just want fios, or something better than 3mbps)

You're lucky it only has only had an effect on you now. See my Joined date? That's when it started for me. Nearly 4 years now. But I still use Win2k, so I have no problem with the workaround. When I first heard about Vista's auto-tuning, I was excited and thought that maybe Verizon was just getting ahead of coming technology. But sadly that wasn't the case.

No, won't make a difference. And you are too far for 7.1.
