| [XP Pro] WinXP Repair problems
I'm working on a troubled laptop that bcastner has been kind enough to help me disinfect with this thread:
»[Spyware] Hosts issue / HJT Log
The laptop appears to be clean, but now Windows is having problems. The current state of the machine is that I can boot it and log in, but explorer.exe won't stay running. If you read the last few posts in that thread you can get an idea about where the machine is at. The case identifies the machine as a HP Compaq nx7400.
I've got an install CD with SP3 on it that I created from an XP Pro SP2 Upgrade CD. I'm trying to get into the setup program to repair the installation, but when I get to the screen where it asks if I want to install or repair, no matter what I do the only response I get is that it can't detect a hard drive (even though it still boots to Windows). The BIOS for the machine is very basic, I can set boot device priority and change a few boolean options but nothing major. The BIOS does include a HDD diagnostic tool that I ran which completed successfully without problems. I get the same response in setup with the original install disc and the slipstreamed disc.
If XP setup isn't even going to run, what are my options to get this thing repaired and back to its user? The main tool that I have available when I boot the computer is the task manager, I can open taskman to launch other programs or pull up a command line. I am able to copy files to and from shares on the network. If I run Notepad and go to open a file, the filesystem is looking pretty screwed up (mislabeled My Computer and My Documents entries, no files shown etc). If I browse the directory structure in a command prompt all of the files are there, but there seem to be several issues with core files that have either become unregistered or have been removed during the cleaning process.
The good news is that the malware is gone though. So that's cool. |

| reply to TCSteve Have the HD controller driver ready in a floppy disc. Press F6 at the beginning of XP setup. Later, you will be prompt for the driver disc. After that, then XP setup will see the HD for repair install. If laptop does not have floppy drive, use nLite to slipstream the driver into the installation CD. -- I used to be indecisive, now I am not sure. |
