[XP Pro] Opening Word, Excel docs - slow

Perhaps this is an Excel or a Word post but...

when I open an existing XLS or DOC directly from the document it takes approximately 10-15 seconds to open the document. Even if I have excel open and seperately browse to another XLS file using explorer I have the same problem.

If I go into Excel or Word directly and choose File - Open it works fine and only takes a second or two.

Using XP Pro

What version of Office is installed? Was the Office installation a "clean install" or "upgrade"?

There is some suggestions in the following previous thread involving Office 2007 installed as an upgrade in XP:

Sorry about that - I forgot to mention it's Office 2003 and it was a brand new install. XP Pro was also a clean install.

Do you have your antivirus configured to scan Office documents when they are opened? That can sometimes increase the open time of your documents. See if you can remove the configuration if you do have your AV configured to scan Office documents upon opening them.
