| Chinese GPS Navigators
Hi Guys,
I'm on tight budget (of $100) and want to buy a basic GPS for my car. Now I've been researching on GPS navigation systems and I've found some unbranded Chinese GPS which have specs comparable to branded ones like tomtom, etc. They use the same SiRF Star III GPS Chipset and for OS they use Windows CE running on top of Samsung ARM9 400MHz or similar CPU.
So would it be advisable to get them, instead of branded one if on tight budget. I need only a basic navigation system...

| You're taking a chance... Some of those cheapies will lock up all the time, etc... The maps are often outdated when you receive the unit and upgrades are usually not available and may never be available. I would only buy a model there are some consumer reviews for online and it looks like it's generally reliable. There are some total "duds" out there...
I bought a Nextar C3 awhile back and I've been lucky. It works well and gets me where I'm going, but no map updates are available and the mount is pretty flimsy. The way prices are coming down on GPS, I probably wouldn't do it again. The price gap between the good brands and the cheap brands is narrowing and I no longer see the sense in taking a chance and settling for old maps.
I've seen some very low prices on some Magellan units lately... also on the TomTom and lower-end Garmin... It might pay to spend an extra $50.00 for quality and the ability to upgrade maps someday. |
