| [Connectivity] Vista connection problems
I am not receiving an internet connection when connecting my laptop (running vista) to the modem (comcast internet).
I have tried unplugging and resetting the modem. This has not helped. If I plug my desktop (windows xp) or playstation into the modem they are able to connect to the internet.
Any ideas on what I can do to solve the problem? I have tried "ipconfig /flushnds" but it does not solve the connection problem.
When I try to diagnose the connection it just says "dns error"
Any help is appreciated. |

| do you powercycle the modem after connecting the vista machine to it? if so, try changing your dns to opendns if it's on automatic right now and repair your local area connection. -- "Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." | reply to mscop I have set up a network. I have "local access"
When I try to repair the network-- I receive a dns error. Then it appears that I have internet access for about 5 seconds (I can't load a webpage but the "connection icon" on the bottom right corner of the screen switches to "local and internet." Then it reverts back to a local connection only before I can access anything on the web. I'm connecting through a comcast cable modem (no router). I know the modem is working because I can connect my pc (xp) and playstation to the internet through it).
I tried changing the dns to "open dns" using instructions I found on the following website »https://www.opendns.com/start?device=windows-vista
It did not work.
I tried connecting the laptop (with vista) to the internet about 4 months ago and had the same problems. I tried once last week and was able to connect it successfully. However, I've tried for the past few days (spending about 4 hrs each day--- connecting and disconnecting the modem etc) and it hasn't worked. I'm going crazy! |

| reply to mscop Please post the output of an ipconfig /all from the Vista box.
Do you have their CDV service and therefore a telephony modem such as an Arris ? |

| reply to mscop I do have digital voice. There is a coaxial cable the runs into my modem. It is a Scientific Atlanta DPC2100 Series.
I don't normally connect more than one computer--hence no router. I'd also want to make sure I can get the laptop to connect to the internet before purchasing one.
I can get the laptop to show that it is connected to the internet (and run "diagnose and repair" and receive a "no error message") But the max time that this status lasts is only lasts for a few minutes and even if it says it is connected I can't load a webpage on the browser.
I've plugged in the laptop so it is not a "sleep" issue.
I had some freeware installed (avg, comodo) that I removed in case there was a compatibility issue---but it still does not work.
I've never had problems connecting over a wireless connection (but I don't have one in my home).
I've run diagnostics on the ethernet and it connects properly.
Ugh. |

I'm confuzzled.. That is not a CDV telephony type modem such as an Arris.. So, do you have 2 modems, the DPC2100 for their HSI service, and another modem for their CDV service ? If so, which modem are you trying to connect the Vista box to ? There is an important reason that this is being asked.
Also, you did not post the requested output of an ipconfig / all. |

| He may not now how to do an ipconfig /all.
You need to find your command prompt. In vista you can click the start circle and in that bottom search box type in cmd, it should find one result.
Click on the result and you should see an old looking DOS style command prompt, this is where you type in the ipconfig /all and hit enter Then post the results here.
Chances are that your vista machine is not getting a valid ip address because you dont have a router and comcast will only dish out a couple of them (1 or 2) and your xp and game console probably have the reserved slots. A router alleviates that and allows all devices to connect. |

And you only get 1 IP addy on a typical residential connection unless you purchase additional ones. |

| You're other boxes are working fine with the modem probably because they're settings are different than your vista machine. Those are probably set on automatically acquire ip and DNS from comcast, and vista might not be. Go to start, Control panel, Click network and internet (make sure on the right you're under control panel home, not classic view), click Network sharing center, click Manage network connections on the left. Right click on Local Area connection, whichever says connected when the modem is plugged in.. and hit properties. On the list that comes up, double click Internet protocol version 4. Check obtain automatically for both boxes, and then click ok until you're out of all the windows. Reset the modem and see if it gets an IP. |

| PS. In my area, you can get as many IP's from comcast.. you're IP will change whenever the mac address of the device the modem's plugged into changes. I've changed mine like 500 times or more for rapidshare downloading etc. Most routers newer routers or older more advanced ones allow you to set your own mac address from the config pages, really comes in handy. |

Is that ethical ? |

@comcast.net
| It's not faking or spoofing a mac... It's the equivalent of moving the modem and plugging it into a different box... an xbox, a different pc... everything you plug it into has a different mac address, and pulls a new IP from comcast. Awhile ago I used to just be able to reset the modem to get a new IP, and i contacted comcast because that stopped working.. that's how I learned about it. |
