| Where to get boxes for moving?
I'm moving out of the apartment on Monday. Can you think of a good place to find good boxes on the cheap? I don't feel like paying $4/box or whatever at UPS or FedEx. And no, I haven't started packing yet. I'm going into a hell of a weekend :/ -- I r a lolcat. |

| reply to illJazz Call up local moving companies and ask if they sell their boxes. When you move you can rent the boxes. Yes rent them then when they are returned they are reused for the next move. I would ask if they would extend this to you even if they are not moving you. Add that you would need alot and they might oblige. If not ask how much outright it would cost to buy them.
Don't forget to have a round figure of the items you need to pack. Be it rooms or dishes, etc, etc.
Also Santa Fe idea is spot on. Ask the local grocery if you can get boxes. |

| reply to illJazz I always go to the supermarket and get them there!!! Just sort through them for good ones!!! My last move I went to the supermarket for boxes and they told me to come there around 5-6 o'clock in the morning before they break down the boxes so they can be thrown in the garbage crusher!!! |

Sometimes grocery, but they usually instantly flatten and compact them these days, unless a mom and pop/neighborhood local.

| reply to illJazz Local liquor store. The boxes are very strong, good sizes and free. May be a good idea to call them before you go, find out what day they get deliveries and get there before they break them down for trash. -- "Be simple, be earnest and spread that simplicity throughout everything you do." |

| reply to illJazz Do you have a Home Depot near by? If so, ask to speak with the night manager (best to call around closing) and ask him if the Freight Team can set aside some boxes for you.
This is what I did when I moved and I couldn't tell you how many boxes I got from Home Depot. All sizes as well. -- "There are two American flags flying on the property I reside on. Anyone who tries to take them down will be rendered inoperative." -Lindy |

There are just too many unused boxes being thrown out by corporations. Heck, here we discard close to 1000 boxes (decent sized ones, about the size to put a CRT monitor in) per day.

| reply to illJazz I would check Craigslist for free boxes. Also, if you live near a liquor store, they usually have boxes they can give you. Those are really good because they're strong. But they're small, so it just depends on what you're looking for.
I used boxes from the liquor store for a lot of things and then bought a few larger boxes from U-Haul.

| reply to illJazz Liquor stores, grocery stores. I prefer apple boxes - they have handle holes on the ends.
Convenience stores too, they have lots of boxes. And use all those plastic grocery bags as packing material.
Another tip: label on the ENDS not just the TOP of boxes.
Use your blankets/ linens/ towels as more than just that - pack your framed artwork, breakables and glass items with them. They may get dirty, but I'll betcha you'd wash them at the new place anyways...
Cleaning your old place: get TSP trisodium phosphate. Use 10:1 water:powder ratio and wash the walls. Great to strip off old grime and crud.

| reply to illJazz Try to stick with what others have posted on trying to get free ones. If it REALLY comes down to having to buy them then U-Haul dealers sell them and also have packing materials. »www.uhaul.com/
Also I have found that alot of times the places that rent storage space will have them for sale as well. |

| reply to illJazz Liquor stores are probably the best. Moving stuff this week I found the smallness of the boxes made easy moving. Bigger boxes usually are too heavy (unless full of blankets and light stuff). I would go against grocery boxes, last time we took those it either smelled like food/or had bugs in them. |
