Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

Since the other thread was starting to get too big, this one was started. Otherwise, for anyone wanting to switch between Interleaved and FastPath mode, just like the last thread post up your line stats (Transceiver stats) from the modem, and we can tell you if your line can handle FastPath or if it needs to go back to Interleaved. You can continue your discussion from the previous thread in here.

What is FastPath?
FastPath is a line mode that is set in DSL to improve latency on the DSL lines. Unlike Interleave which is used over longer or marginal lines because of it's error correcting abilities, FastPath will cut the latency from your modem to the DSLAM/Gateway in half, sometimes even more which is beneficial to gamers. For example, a 768k line may get a minimum of 35ms latency to the first gateway on Interleaved. On FastPath, this same connection can get its latency chopped to roughly 14ms. On faster plans from Verizon, you can get latency as low as 6ms on FastPath!

Do I need FastPath?
While everyone here may not be a gamer, FastPath because it cuts latency may make the internet a bit more "snappy," so if your line can handle FastPath but it isn't already set on FastPath, you might as well get it as it can benefit you in the long run, especially in the future since online gaming is a common thing to do these days.

Where do I ask for FastPath?
If you are a member on this site, you can ask to get moved to FastPath or onto Interleave mode via the Verizon Direct forum here. If you are not a member of this site, you can register and ask for FastPath or Interleave in the forum, or you can call Verizon up and they should be able to give it to you. We recommend the forums here though, as they can often save you a lot of time.

I asked for FastPath, why don't I have it?
Not everyone will be able to get FastPath. Though it is something that can be applied in literally minutes to your line, line limitations may be causing the line to not sync with FastPath. Also, the Central Office you are being fed out of may have denied the request for a reason such as the line possibly having problems as well. Traditionally, unless we see that your line cannot handle FastPath without losing sync, you should be able to get it.

What is Interleaved Mode?
Interleaved mode is basically a setting in DSL that will improve the reliability of a DSL like over long lines or marginal lines. Interleaved is also DSL's way of error correcting which is useful, again, or long or marginal lines. Interleaved will help raise the margins slightly and may improve transfer rates over marginal lines, but at the expense of latency. Pings on Interleaved are generally double of what they are on FastPath.

My line keeps disconnecting and I have FastPath! Should I move to Interleaved?
Well, hold on for a minute. Post up your line stats and we can certainly see if FastPath is making you disconnect. If it is the cause, we'll recommend some things for you based on what your internet use is like.

Hope this clears up some questions for people like on the last thread if anyone missed that.

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

Does Verizon reset the setting? I got on fastpath like a year or so ago and never changed my service plan, but just out of curiosity I was looking up my transceiver stats and it says interleaved now... Don't know how long it's been like that though. Maybe my stats are worse now and they dropped me back? Anyways here they are:

Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 864
Margin (dB) 15.0 13.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 31.0 20.0
Transmit Power (dBm) 6.7 11.9

Am I still good enough for fastpath?

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

Not sure about my stats.
I called once today, Verizon informed me that a line test as well as a test regarding latency are done during the initial stages and the technicians should have provided me with the optimal settings. I'm assuming it's BS considering so many people have posted and have been changed to FastPath.

My Stats:
Transceiver Revision: 4.3.0.1
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: ADSL2+ Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

Well, your margins are acceptable for FastPath, so it seems like you were fed some bad info. Otherwise, go for it and see how it works out. Seeing as though you already have the 7.1Mbps speed, you are obviously close enough to handle it.

i was on fastpath and then moved to interlaced when a technician was at location looking at a high latency issue and low connection speeds. but it worked for over 2 years on fastpath. now that i'm on interlaced i feel my gaming has gotten laggier and downloads are alot slower. any suggestions?

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

Can you post up your line (Transceiver) stats for us to see? It may have worked good for 2 years with FastPath, but if the line degraded a bit, that might explain why your speeds were slow with high latency. Yet again, many times there's just a problem at the CO with congestion or the like.

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

You're close to 2 miles from the source of the DSL, so the 7.1Mbps speed won't happen, sorry. Otherwise, ask for FastPath in the Verizon Direct forum here again if you can. If the pings and speeds are still not what they are supposed to be after FastPath, create a new thread in this forum and we can help you.

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

I wouldn't go for FastPath with that line. While their may be a little bit of margin available, but not that much, your upstream isn't synced fully which may show that FastPath is only going to make that sync lower. Sorry .

You can get it if you want, but it may make the DSL become unstable until it can find a good sync rate to lock at which is why I suggest against it.

so i was moved over to fast path. i see it in transtat i took a speedtest with only my main computer running and no other traffic according to netstat -a. here's a screen shot

»tinypic.com/view.php?pic=6elu7b&s=4

i gather that, that isn't the greatest speed and it isn't the 3Mb that i should be getting?

Not really for a few reasons. First, the test itself isn't a very good one. Second, the server for it is half way across the country. When running speed tests, it's best to run to servers that are closest to you.

Verizon has admitted their Speed test site is not that good, but does anyone know why their speed test site is not that good. Also, how do you know where the Verizon speed test or receiving test server is located?

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

Basically in some areas, you can get a higher speed than the 3Mbps speed for residential rates. By saying that, if 7.1Mbps were available to you and if you ever wanted it, your margins and attenuation is low enough where you can boost your speed to almost triple the sync rate on the downstream, same sync upstream and still keep enough margin to hold the connection with FastPath reliably.

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

The upstream syncing improperly is because of the upstream margin. If anything it looks as though you're less than 11.8k from your exchange, it looks like something may just be adding noise to the upstream as the downstream has a good margin (18dB on the downstream at your speed is very good! Shows you're close to the exchange). Before you ask for FastPath, I'd try cleaning up your line a bit to see if you can get the upstream path margin a bit higher. If not, you can still request it but your upstream sync will lower slightly.

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

This is dependant on your modem that you're using. For most Westells, it's »192.168.1.1/transtat.htm or you go to System Monitors/Advanced Monitors/Transceiver stats and get the stats there. I think the ActionTecs are laid out the same way as going to System Monitors and such, but since I don't have any knowledge on them I don't know where to find them besides searching.

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

You would quality for it, however your upstream sync is not synced properly, and the noise margin is too low on the upstream. I would get the line cleaned up a little so that the upstream syncs at 864kbps, and the margin is a bit higher than 9 as well if possible. Once you do this, you're all set to go.

Your margin on the downstream is a bit low. The upstream sync is off on 32kbps, but yet it looks like your downstream attenuation is higher than it should be. I think you might be able to quality for FastPath once the line is cleaned up if it is in fact a little noisy on the DSL side. A NID test or using another jack close to the NID using the rounded cable the modem came with might show some better stats.

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

OK. It's pretty simple to understand. Your Sync rate is measured in Kilobits per second, and proper sync rate should be 3360 on the downstream or download side of the modem, and upstream or upload sync should be 864kbps.

Line mode is what kind of ADSL/mode your line is on. G.DMT is Verizon standard, however dependant on area, ADSL2+ and other line modes can be used.

Margin is the measure of DSL signal to your line noise. Your modem can detect this based on the amount of errors that come into the modem. Most of these errors are not noticable or detectable until the line margin gets very, very low. The margin you don't want to be near is 6dB as it shows you might disconnect if the line varies, but 10dB and above is a good margin to maintain.

Line attenuation is how much the DSL signal is weakened by factors such as wire length, old, degraded, and/or low gauge wire, wether there's twisted cable available (twisted pair cable has less noise on it), and of course the things around you. Think of attenuation as turning down the volume on a TV. As more attenuation is added, the quieter the signal is and the harder it is for the modem to hear the DSLAM, and the harder it is for the modem to transmit back to the DSLAM, and the more attenuation there is on a line, the harder the equipment has to work to try to maintain sync, such as increasing the line power.

The transmit power is simply how much energy is getting sent through to the line.
