Can a MR 814 v1 be set up as an access point for xbox live?

My son got an xbox 360 and of course he wants to go on xbox live. Microsoft want 100 for the wireless adaptor, ouch. Any way I have an old MR 814v1 can I use it as an access point and connect to the wireless router in the house.

Thanks!

Probably not. However you could tell your kid to shut off the xbox and start working on programming classes. It's never too early! Eventually maybe he can write his own firmware and if the chipset is flexible enough he can do it.

Or, he could find some way to earn $100. Is there some way to actually make money with an xbox, besides selling it?

Should not be any reason why not.
My only concern would be to ensure to enable wpa-psk or wpa2-psk security. Im sure the xbox is capable of it, but not sure on the MR814. If not you can get a wifi router cheap these days. Zyxel P330W often on sale at buy.com for example or trendnet routers....

When you do, simply follow this advice.

I was guessing that the OP did not want to run UTP from the "wireless router in the house" to the xbox. I was also guessing that the OP's xbox does not have wireless capability without adding the adapter. I could be wrong about those.

Therefore he would have to use the wired ethernet port on the xbox, which could indeed plug into the MR814. However then how is he going to get from the MR814 to anywhere else? MR814v1 has not had a firmware update in years.

Therefore WDS is not available and the only way to get from the MR814 to the "wireless router in the house" would be by another ethernet cable. So if that's the case, why wouldn't the OP just run the cable straight from the "wireless router in the house" straight to the xbox?

Not sure of the ops setup but it sounds like he can wire close to but not all the way to the xbox and wants to use the MR as an AP to talk wirelessly to the xbox. I dont have either unit so not sure on their capabilities.
