[Help Me] Multiple DIR-655's - best configuration?

I have 2 DIR-655's

Primary downstairs in the office
DHCP on
Connected to 5 port GB switch (D-link) and 3 other devices
FW 1.11

Secondary is upstairs in family room
DHCP off
Several devices connected
FW 1.20

GB Cat5e cable between the two, SSID is the same for both. Both are set up with wireless channel on "auto" and channel width on "20MHz."

All clients use 802.11G, not N

Here's my questions.

What is the best configuration for the best G troughput? If I turn it to "G only" will that be best?

We roam between the two a lot and I am concerned that having both set to the same SSID allows me to roll back and forth without disconnecting and reconnecting (important for my non-tech wife), but sometimes my strength shows ~25% close to the downstairs router. Feels like I might still be connected upstairs....

Any thoughts or inputs are appreciated.

How come you got the other one flash to 1.20 you should put back 1.11 on it to play it safe. That's choice is up to you anyway.

SSID should be the same as the one you're using?

SSID: Schmmodle

Yes if you want G to use use G-only don't mix it and use the WPA AES for security.

You have to explain more what's going on. Make sure everything is set for G54 performance on the wireless NIC if you have that features. Connect to Best Speed don't force it to connect at 54 otherwise you might not able to connect at all.

Did you give the second DIR-655 a static IP and then use the first Router to Reserved that IP address?

Everything on the network has a static IP.

I put 1.20 on the second one because it was brand new and was installing it. I didn't bother to mess with the one downstairs (1.11) because everythng is working fine.

Here is the network map:

Boy I need to redo my you guys got it so colorful. So you use a Linksys for the main, do you have that dd-wrt or tomato as the firmware also?

Static IP on everything well in DHCP Client listing out assign the DHCP reserve on nodes you want have those IP adresses without going static IP for everything. I only use static on WAP1, WAP2 and WDS1. I see you have NAS in the mix.

Is the one DIR-655 enough, how about those laptops are they showing excellent over 20dB?

Actually, the map looks deceiving. The Linksys is the upstairs router, and that was replaced by the second DIR-655. The downstairs router is connected to the cable modem.

How can I tell if the laptops are showing over 20dB?

Time to redo your map to show what you go presently.. where did you place the DSL modem and how come the main wireless router is so far from it?

Each laptop would need to run NetMeter see what your getting the program can also export logs you can post here if you want. Program is 100% freeware. 20dB is the transmit RF power that's what you should be getting. If you got DLINK adapters or built in wireless in the laptop they it's going vary from 13dB, 14dB, 15dB, 16dB, 17dB, (18dB, 19dB, (20dB max)) You would be surprise how many NICs don't hit 20dB mark that's why you see low, good to very good 10db to 20db connections and excellent is over 20dB.

Download netmeter

To test dB and -dBm
Download (freeware)

OK, downloaded wirelessmon (nice program, will probably pay for it!) and I can see both APs.

When I am upstairs, 5 feet from the router, I get -30Db on the one I am connected to and -75 on the one downstairs.

Then I go downstairs and after a minute or so I am at -40 on the downstairs because I switched to that.

I have to be right on top of them to get -20. If I am 5-6 feet away it is -30 to -40.

How are the both routers position ANT? They say that the ANT should be located on the sides because of interference from ANT to close to the wires in ports. That's another reason I use external switches to min interfere.

Make sure all cables don't touch, power cords, ethernet cables or coax cables.
