[iPhone] iPhone Speedtest plus GEO-TAGGING, question for Justin

Justin is it possible to add geo-tagging data to the results generated at »i.dslr.net/iphone_speedtest.html ?

If so, it would allow a more scientific collection of data as compared to the study conducted by Wired Mag »blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/08/g···e-3.html.

Perhaps this would help AT&T to put more 3G bars in more places!

Thanks!

Re: [iPhone] iPhone Speedtest plus GEO-TAGGING, question for Jus

To enable geotags with speedtest results one would probably have to write an actual iPhone app. I don't see how a web based speedtest could pull GPS data from the iPhone otherwise.

it has to be a native iphone speed test app, which is fine but takes a little longer to get done than a web based one.

On the other hand I doubt even a native app is allowed to query the carrier and the connection type and signal strength - this info is the most critical to get right for a proper survey.

It should be doable. Check out this app.

The signal strength and network info are accessible via bluetooth as seen on my Garmin, so this info should be accessible. It would be awesome if a BBR.app were to be created, which could include a speedtest with geo-tagging data.

Anyone know how to write such an app?

The geo-tagging data is for sure available, as many apps use this info.

Maybe not, but if it can take an internal screenshot of what's on the screen, then there could be some image processing software that would analyze the 20x130 pixel region in the top left corner where the signal strenght, carrier info and connection type resides...

Not easy, but I assume not impossible.

Johnny seems to have a decent grasp on Cocoa...

The app would have to do what?

-take screenshot
-do a timed download of a file and calculate speed
-do a timed upload of a file and caculate speed
-POST results to a BBR URL

Maybe he could use a little side job.

I engaged an iphone developer a couple of weeks ago who is already working on one, perhaps after the first version is complete and works, someone here might like to take it and enhance it.

You solved this one with the website. The user picks which test to run No need to reinvent the wheel here.
