ATT-AACE? Anyone know what program this is?

I found this on my add/remove programs today and I have no idea what program this is. I am suspicious and afraid it is some type of malware. Has anyone heard of this before?

I did consider that as I do have ATT. However I do not remember ever seeing this program before. I recently had a bunch of malware and I had to review these programs to see what belonged, and what did not. Funny I do not remember this and I did spend a lot of time looking at all my programs. I guess I could contact them and ask about it. Thanks.

See

and

»[Software] AT&T Installation software is officially a virus

EDIT - Looks like I finally found a use for Site Advisor. The writeup looks quite useful for those wishing to disinfect a PC with this stuff on it. I'd use the uninstaller first, then create a restore point and manually remove the rest.

I will look at that, thank you. That is what I was afraid of when I saw it. Dang.

As you may have already noted, it's not some hacker malware, but rather the usual ISP-sourced crapware/partnerware to install applications that are not necessary to provide the internet service, and to "provide an enhanced user experience" by bundling toolbars, messengers etc with some connection configurator and updater.

A little more digging yields this 2005 topic regarding a package containing the "BJAXSECURITYMANAGER" referenced in the registry entries.

I had to wait to online chat with a tech in ATT and they said it is not their program. I am going to uninstall if possible.

I don't have much faith in the ATT support people's technical expertise - at least at the business account level. I would still suspect that somehow a CD (from ATT/SBC/Yahoo or whatever) to install the stuff was put into the PC and some installation application was executed.

Don't forget to set restore points prior to doing the uninstall and another prior to manually cleaning. Crap Cleaner (Piriform's Crap Cleaner) will prompt you to back up the registry prior to "fixing" orphaned entries.

The AT&T crapware is very sneaky.

Even if your service was installed before they started requiring the install crapware as a prerequisite for getting your initial PPPoE username/password (or you were able to get a customer friendly AT&T CSR or tech to manually setup the PPPoE credentials), you can still get the crap installed on your PC if you use the wrong url to make account or password changes.

This url>> »changepw.bellsouth.net/ from the AT&T support site requires Windows and Internet Explorer, and it installs the "Motive Smart" Active-X crapware.

When you use the Change Internet Services Password link from the Member Services link on the AT&T portal site, it is platform independent and it installs nothing on your PC.
