| water in cat5e cable to radio
Hello List,
For our school I set up two tranzeo TR5a radios to make a 7mi. PtP bridge. This install is now 14 months old. Over the last 3-4 months the signal & noise level has gone very ( numerically) high. Doing some checking one of the two power supplies was only showing half voltage with my multimeter tester, so I purchased a new power supply & power injector for this radio. Still my Noise is -107 and Power is -92. On further checking i seen some "black" on the cat5e connector, that went into the power injector module. I replaced this connector and when cutting the end of the cat5e with sidecutters i got moisture ,AKA: water coming out. So,, my question is,will this moisture cause the noise& Power levels to tank? I m going to go up in the next few days,,with a new wire,but just curious if anyone has run into this scenario? BTW: I did use UV rated wire so Im guessing somewhere going up the side of the building,, I dragged a scratch in the outer jacket? Needless to say this was my first attempt at doing a wireless bridge setup.

When water gets into a jacket like this, it will cause all kinds of weird things to happen, especially if you leave it in long term. There is a slight chance the radio is ruined, as the short created by the water between the negative and positive poles may have burned something upon the board.

You would be much better off using gell filled OSP cable. Graybar should be able to get it for you. I use Superior-Essex and no I have never had the problem. Good cable makes a difference! |

i found out yesterday that the MOST important step is teo make sure the cable is outdoor rated adn you use the water proofing on the connectors. Friday night my link at home worked great, it was raining when i went to bed and no problems. got up Sat morning, go to jump on the net and no internet. pull up Wipmanage and i can see the BSR, but not the backhaul to teh office. get up there and sure enough, had water in the connector! i had left teh waterproofing off the connector cause this was a temporary link until i got a guy to put it up the tower. lukcy for me, the SDA-4 at the bottom sensed the short and shut off. nothing hurt but the RJ45 on teh end of teh cable.

Also if the TR5a is not an integrated unit and has an external antenna, you may want to replace the LMR Jumper between the radio and antenna, a little moisture in the Jumper will cause all sorts of signal problems. |

a word of advice is to jut use the seal tranzeo gives you, it works perfect, if you add a sealant it will leak, especially if you etch it with sicilcone sealant.
Since Ive been here we have had three or four tranzeos fill up with water, all had extra sealant, since we started just using the cup seal, not one has leaked.
theres a good chance that will be your issue, the radio is full of water, and I mean full, we had a 4900 full of water, the link went bad, but the radio stayed up, they must spray a sealant laquer on their circuitry like lg does on their cell phones or somethin |

Yes the flooded cable really is the only cure to this, this happened to me last year and we have been using flooded cable ever since.
If you end up with graybar ask for part no 04-001-54.
That is superior essex shielded flooded cable. |
