| reply to battleop Re: That's not my job. - CWA Motto
You know, it's whiners like you that tic me off. You and those like you can *always* do it better, faster, cheaper, blah, blah, blah - the list goes on and on. You're quick to point a finger at "union rules" when "X" doesn't happen to your liking.
They're WORK rules. They are the result of NEGOTIATING company and union desires. In the end, EVERYONE got enough of what they wanted to come to an agreement. What is so terrible about that? Do you prefer to be treated like some mindless drone? Do you trust management emphatically with your health & safety (that worked so well in the past that OSHA and the Department of Labor were created and still exist today - ever wonder why)?. Does management put your ability to provide for your family ahead of its profits and stock price?
Do you actually know what the problem of bringing that cable to the colo was - or are you just union bashing for the hell of it? Maybe you're jealous because these guys have better benes and make more than you? Maybe you have been working 45+ hours a week or Saturdays lately for your regular 40 hour pay - and seeing a work crew sent home by VZ because they didn't want to pay OT rates, angered you. You chose an "exempt" position - we however, did NOT. Do you see me complaining about YOUR employment package?
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. You didn't see those guys when the job they had was to replace cables and poles damaged by natural disaster or accident in blistering heat, freezing cold, over night, etc. You see, the climate controlled data center work doesn't happen everyday for these guys - unlike it does for *YOU* |

| I agree and I work on the other side of the company. The mangement side that already lost all their benefits! The union guys at our company do a very good job and run rings around cable company employees. |

| reply to SteveCon CWA workers that I know work well. They don't "screw" the company over either. But I do know some unions, like the autoworkers are unwilling to give a little, which is hurting the companies they work for. I myself am not part of union, and the company does still offer a very good benefits package that is similar to what the union employees get.
All in all, our union techs are top notch and get the job done. They also try to make the company look good in whatever way they can. This particular deal sounds reasonable, as 3.5% a year is barely keeping up with inflation, but the union understands the sort of financial climate telco's are in. |

| reply to SteveCon So here is more on the story. They send out an engineer who told us where to put the conduit and what specific type of pull string. He told us anything other than the provided brand/size/etc would mean they would not bring the cable in.
So the day they show up they send 4 guys with a bucket truck. One guy to bring it from the pole, one guy to shout orders and two guys to stand there. So they get the cable to the building and start calling to find out where the other crew was. After 45 minutes I ask what they were doing. They said they were waiting on some guys to come pull the cable in. I asked if they mean someone to pull on the pull string from the other side. They said yes. So I asked why couldn't one of the other guys standing around couldn't do that. They said it's not their job to do that.
Even after that it took another guy to terminate the cable in the building, another guy to terminate it at the pole, and another guy to put up the multi mount, and yet another guy to turn up the T1s to this customer. |

1 edit | reply to SteveCon Just like the CWA jerk that put me on hold once while he took his break. When he came back 10-15 minutes later we asked where the hell he had been.
Union Break.
Those of us who work "Exempt" get paid very well for it. If you're dumb enough to not demand fair pay for the hours you know you may end up working then even a Union is not going to help you.
10.5% over three years is not a pay raise. Factor 5% a year for inflation (I consider it 8% cause I do factor in energy and food) and you took a pay cut.
Not sure how fully funded the health care is, but I hope that makes up for it somehow. -- Mac Chatter »www.macchatter.net |
