Anyone know how to capture NBCOlympics.com video streams

Hello, I have tried WM COnverter, Replay Media Capture, Orbit and Media Downloader and none can seem to capture NBC Olympic streams. It uses Microsofts Silverlight technology. ANyone have any idea how to save these streams to HDD?

Then do not use Silverlight, use Windows Media Player instead.

Your right, they are WMV files, but none of the programs can capture them?'

Replay Media Catcher usually has no trouble, but I guess Microsoft did something to the files.

No, they use Silverlight from Microsoft, which the NY Times had a write-up about that Microsoft may be in violation of its antitrust settlement. Silverlight is trying to destroy, er, compete with Adobe Flash. I refuse to download it. No wonder what crap is in it.

Slightly OT: I found the NBCOlympics.com site very easy to use with very viewable broadcasts. A welcome surprise since my non-HD TV gets the fuzzys.

No registration needed to boot!

Thanks for letting me know about it.

Hmm not working for me. I finished watching a 2 minute clip, I uninstalled Silverlight and just used the regular WMV, but I cannot find any asx files in my Ie contect folder.

When I use Download Helper for Firefox, it downloads the wmv, but the file is only 1kb? It is not grabbing the entire stream?

Punker can you give me step by step instructions on what you did? Did you watch the whole video first then go to the folder to check on the asx file? I am using the latest IE 6.0

Not only are they using that Silverlight or whatever (which I refuse to download), they (nbc and the olympics) are discriminating against not only Linux, but any version of Windows PREVIOUS to XP SP2. what's with this?

A gap of about 4 years and newer .NET frameworks only supported in XP SP2 and later.

Punker, to get the asx files you have to have silvercrap installed??

And the asx files you have on your HDD, how big are they? How many MB is a stream. My intention is to convert the asx streams to DIVX so I can watch them on my tv.

I would also like to know how to save files from NBCOlympics. I tried all the tips listed here and nothing works...I had to install Silverlight (unfortunately) or the files wouldn't play, WMP doesn't work. Videodownloadhelper saved wmv files, but they're tiny, are not the actual videos and do not play. I tried using Internet explorer to view and then searching though the temp files, but there were no asx videos...I even tried viewing the page source but couldn't find anything. I'd like to save some stuff to my hd for offline viewing, so if anyone has advice I would really appreciate it!

Actually just yesterday I was doing the research and testing because my WMRecorder stopped grabbing Pandora and doesn't work with nbcolympics.com, but want to know what does?

Replay Media Catcher 3.0 (»www.applian.com/replay-media-catcher) does a great job of capturing the stream from nbc.

Unfortunately the program is not free and the demo promises only 75% of the download. I was able to find unrestricted "demo" versions of Replay Media Catcher but they are not version 3.0...only 3.0 seems to do the job with the nbc site.

But here's your answer nevertheless...I'll keep reseraching for alternatives...Good Luck

Ok I found a way albeit long, to save the whole stream:

1)Open Replay Media catcher and let it catch the stream you want.

Right click the stream and select properties.

Then copy and past the »mms://address to VLC Media Player

www.videolan.org/vlc/)

2)
In VLC go to file, Wizard, select transcode/save

Selct choose, click on the Network tab, in the mms address bar, copy and past the address from replay media catcher

Select Mpeg1, save file to desktop, as VLC plays the stream (no video will show this normal) it will transcode.

SO if it is a 5 minute vid, it will take 5 min.

Afer it is done, rename the file extension to ".mpg"
