| [Mp3] MP3 player suitable for a kid?
My son is turning 5 in a week and we thought that an MP3 player might be a good gift for him. We were looking at the Fisher Price FP3 player ( »www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Toug···2&sr=8-2 ), but the reviews stated that it doesn't actually handle MP3s. You have to take your MP3s, burn them to CD, then rip them off one at a time, entering the information for each song as you go. This all sounds disappointing, especially considering that we liked their camera. It sounds like they mainly wanted to avoid paying the license fee for MP3 support.
I was looking at different players and came upon the Sansa Shaker ( »www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Sha···2&sr=8-3 ). I have a Sansa e250 and love it. Does anyone have the Shaker? Do you think that this (plus a 1GB SD card to expand this) would be a good gift for a 5 year old? Do you recommend any other players? -- -Jason Levine Support a children's charity. Buy a calendar. | Bought my 9yo son a Shaker last year. It is a solid, inexpensive player, and perfect for a 5yo.
Built in speaker means you don't have to worry about ear buds (and potentially her damaging her ears with too high a volume.
Since it doesn't have a display, no screen to get damaged. No menus for her to learn to negotiate. But because of this, you probably want to skip the 1GB card, as too many stored songs on the player makes it difficult to navigate. But if she is like most young kids, she'll listed to the same 5 songs to death... -- New to Forum Life? Click here and learn. |

| reply to Jason Levine Figured I'd post an update. We did get my son a Shaker (ok, my parents paid for it so technically it was their gift ). I loaded it up with his songs and he now has fun playing his music. Of course, he seems to have a short attention span and shakes it after 10 seconds to hear different songs.
I'm not sure how it will stand up to repeated 5 year old use (or 1 year old use, his brother -- ever eager to be like Big Brother Noah -- has taken an interest in it). I'm also not sure if the entire line is being discontinued or what. We got his on clearance at Circuit City and then saw it on sale in Toys R Us a few weeks later. Still, it's a nice player for him to use. -- -Jason Levine Support a children's charity. Buy a calendar and/or a photo book. Shooting For A Cause |
