AT&T U-Verse Router

AT%T is telling me that I must use their router for wireless connectivity and will not be able to use the router I currently have set up. Is that true? or is this just AT&T being difficult?

While you have to use it to get connectivity in your home you don't have to use the wireless portion.

Plenty of people have put their own routers in the DMZ of the ATT provided equip and used their own.

You can often bridge the routers and use your own for networking (wireless or wired).

You can't bridge the RG it's not like a ADSL modem/router.

AT&T will not provide support for your attempts to use your own router. However there's nothing to stop you from putting your own router in, on your own dime and your own troubleshooting.

That said... I always advise people to first try using the RG's built-in wireless, and only if that does not work for them for some reason, to go to a 2nd router. I know people feel "comfortable" with their setups as is, but it is more complicated to have two routers.

Good luck!

I hooked up my old Netgear router to the AT&T RG, but only because I needed an extra ethernet connection. Works well as a backup wireless connection as well. Probably do need to call AT&T though. The RG's wireless connection doesn't seem to be very stable.

Perfectly fine for me and better signal strength then any other router I have had. I would verify you have the latest drivers for your wireless card.

I just got u-verse yesterday and the wireless connection is the most stable I have ever seen. My RG is down in my storage room and my computer is upstairs in my dining room. It picks up either "Very Good" or "Good." My ibook also picks up good reception, but I use that downstairs so I expected that. I also have a wireless music bridge which plays music from my computer through the router and onto the stereo in the other dining room. With my old router it used to pick up a maximum of like 62% and that is when the router was only a room away. With the Gateway which is downstairs it picks up 80%. Plus, I was surprised to see it worked with the RG. I didn't even have to plug it into the RG. I just setup my RG to my old network SSID and password and it picked it up and connected. I have a question, let's say in a year I like the gateway and the internet and I want to drop the TV. Would I be able to do that? Would it cost the same amount as regular DSL?

Yeah I second this. I don't know WHAT kind of antenna that thing has in it, but the wireless signal is the best of any router I've had. It even beats out my WRT54G with firmware-tweaked signal strength and high gain antennas, by quite a margin.

The RG actually detects if you plug another router in and tries to help you configure it.

It's something else. I had a Trendnet TEW-432BRP with a 6 dbi antenna and this thing can pick up better signal than that thing ever could. I want to know the "secret recipe" they use to make the signal so strong.

Wow! All router manufacturers need to do that.

Yes you can drop the TV and keep the Internet. Just look on your bill, they are priced separately, the Internet price would not change because you drop the TV.

Cool. I may do that. It depends on how much I like the T.V.

It has a USB port but not for that purpose.

Belkin sells a network USB hub, although you're probably better off just buying a printer with built-in wireless capability.

My boyfriend and I just spent 2 hours on the phone with ATT. The "tech" that answered put us on hold after every single step to find out what to do next in the book or ask the manager. TWO HOURS and all he could do was give us the phone number to Linksys. Now that I know the problem is they want us to switch to their stuff thanks to this thread, I'll be returning everything I bought today. I thought my old D-link was the culprit until I saw the Linksys wasn't connecting to the laptop wirelessly as well. ATT thanks for wasting my time. The least they could do is send out an email or letter stating what is happening so their customers don't think there is something wrong with their current router.
