| [Exchange] MIssing Messages After Canceling Move
Running Exchange 2003, client using Outlook 2003. PST located on a network share.
So one of our users who was close to their Exchange quota moves one of their subfolders in their inbox to archive it into a PST file. They move it, and then cancel it seeing as no messages were showing up in the PST, however the subfolders were created. They then move the subfolders from the PST back to their Exchange mailbox and voilà, no messages can be found in either the PST or their mailbox. The PST size confirms that very little was added and the folder size reading on their Exchange account comes up with zero for the messages missing in those subfolders.
Thought there would be chance a if we had gotten the user's old system and tried opening Outlook offline to access it in cached mode to recover it, but no dice, user already tried checking for their missing messages on there.
So besides restoring the entire Exchange database, which our systems group isn't going to do, is there any other ways to recover those messages, since I hate being the bearer of bad news.
Oh, and any idea why the messages would have gone missing to start with? My take is that since it appears to be a hefty amount of messages they were moving to the PST, canceling it and then proceeding to move what was an incomplete data back to their Exchange mailbox thereby overwriting it. |
