| Yes, the main reason being Fiber To The Home (FTTH) versus Time Warner's Fiber To The Node (FTTN). I'd switch to Verizon simply based on the fact they are investing heavily in their infrastructure while Time Warner is contemplating caps on bandwidth (in my opinion to stifle online movie services and other broadband intensive application that competes with their own offerings). |

| reply to andranic Pros of FIOS:
- Much better internet bandwidth for a reasonable price. - Good channel selection, much better HDTV selection.
Cons of FIOS:
- Need a "box" for each TV, no more analog TV. (this is true for satellite also) - You can't go back to analog phone lines after you have switched. (And that goes for everyone that goes in after you leave your home, so if you RENT, you may not be allowed to install it) - From what I heard, there are still some significant problems with their DVR software.
Pros of TWC Cable:
- You can still hook up any (old) TV without a box, including TV-cards in your computer. - Moving service is easier, as it is likely there is cable in your new place. - You can keep your phone lines separate from cable TV (for some this is an advantage, not all eggs in one basket or all services through 1 cable)
Cons of TWC Cable:
- They need major network upgrades before they will be able the same HD offering, thus they are always lagging behind on new channels. - Internet Speeds are decent, (not as bad as DSL) but not as good as they could be. - There are rumors they may introduce caps. Although I don't see that happening in competitive markets with FIOS availability.
I decided not to go into the whole "fiber versus copper" thing, as I believe that cable companies can offer a whole lot more through copper cables. It is not HOW it gets to your house, it is the quality and speed that counts. FIOS had got cable beat right now, but I don't believe cable is beaten yet.
In a nutshell, if you own your house or are a long-term renter and your landlord is ok with it, I would definitly switch to FIOS. If you plan to move within the next year or so, I would wait, as moving FIOS from one location to another pretty much means a re-install, and I think they charge for that. -- "Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both" - Benjamin Franklin, Founding Father. |

| reply to andranic Thanks for all the info. I ordered my Fios TV service today and will be leaving TWC after having it my whole life.
The 100 HD channels that they have now for NYC is a big plus for me. I have had Fios internet for some time now and love it.
I will give a full review once I get everything next week |

| reply to andranic I have an awesome package with TimeWarner right now, and im price locked in for 2 years. FIOS even if it was available, cannot offer the package i have (trust me i checked).
So its up to what offers you the best services, and for how much. FIOS has the speed, the network (sounds like a ad) and the HD lineup. Price depends, on what you want.
TimeWarner is easier to install, and with the right package, can be cheaper. YMMV!
personally, i would goto FIOS |
