NOTE: If you are trying openSUSE 11.0 RC2, could happen that your network card won't work. Depends on the firmware. You can use a usb-ethernet adaptor in the mean time. This is likely to be fixed in the final version.

You thought it would be an easy cake walk????
The GIU interface is much better in the past few years, but considering most manufactures still don;t want to support it, mostly its reversed engineered or standard (like Postscript/USB standard format) drivers.
Maybe you should actually be bitching at SONY or the card maker?
AND by the way the more interested in Linux continually do that when you run into brick wall the BETTER.
They NEED to know there are FAR more of us out here than they think there are... easpecially with several MAJOR manufacturers like DELL and ASUS making ground up Linux machines now. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

But you haven't about even though about complaining to playstation for not supporting.... where to their frame of mind we need a partnership with the big money boys not the pleebs to make it worthwhile.
For some one that has been with computers since the 60's.... stacks of punch cards ans building sized machine... and even few remaining analog computers....
What has happened with Linux in under a decade is ASTOUNDING.... and its all grass roots...that is the Playstation PURELY COMMERCIAL model problem.
That there product is the thing not the platform.
Many Linux people pay for product... Just don't want to unnecessarily pay for bloated infection ridden OS's any more. ANd on the order of $25 or $50 not $500... people will gladly pay for good software.
That is where your complaints need to go... make them see the need for that development at reasonable cost (especially when potentially talking thousands or millions.)
And if that ever majorly happened they would say well all the virus people will move there.... difference would be they would have as many working against them, vs M$ that has ONLY cared about the $, and lets face it essentially STOLE DOS to begin with, and copied WIN from creative others lke AMIGA and Mac..
Also BULLIED both AMIGA and APPLE into the background with the bully power of IBM MS initially had.
So do you want product or just more BS? -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

If the Linux, Ubuntu (most popular GIU but one of many distros) 7.10 is quite stable...8.x was prematurely relased and problematic for many, even semi experienced Linux users.
And another thing about Linux you have several flavors to choose from.... not what M$ and Apple want to charge you HUNDREDS for even to upgrade.
Also why the Dell and ASUS amoungst others LIUX ground up built machines are so much cheaper. And at least with original Linux version no driver compatibilty problems, all the onboard hardware works flawlessly. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

We've all been new to linux at some point in time... going off on a person just makes Linux users look bad.
Anonymous_ Can you run the command lspci when booted into linux and post the output, that should tell us what NIC card is used and allow us to help a bit. CS_BuddyBlack MagePremium join:2002-01-03 Canada | reply to Anonymous_ I'm running Gusty Xubuntu 7.10 on my PS3. There are some really good install docs for it:
»help.ubuntu.com/community/PlayStation_3
1. Format Hard Disk to partition for Linux (sounds like you've already done this) 2. Copy the otheros.bld file onto a USB stick under the /PS3/otheros directory (try booting the Ubuntu CD on its own, I didn't need to do this step). 3. In the XMB, go to [Settings] > [System Settings] > [Default System]. Choose Choose "Other OS" as the default, reboot when prompted. 4. System should reboot, and load either using the USB key or the CD, and start the install.
Should be able to follow the links from there. Any USB keyboard/mouse should work. There are a few wireless and bluetooth ones that should work fine as well, although the bluetooth ones might need some extra steps. I'm using a Logitech Cordless MediaBoard, and it worked right off the bat.
Regular Ubuntu should work fine, but I prefer XFCE over Gnome for a lighter interface. You'll be able to browse the web, play non HD movies over mplayer, but it's a limited machine. The Sony hypervisor locks out the RSX graphics chip, so everything has to be software rendered. There are some ways to improve mplayer for example to use some resources of RSX through FIFO but its pretty advanced. -- You are saying impudence to me! THAT IS IMPUDENCE!!! |

If the iso and burn have not been verified, it's a waste of time to go on. This is where my advice turns into an argument (I'm done) and it gets tiring to go through this over and over just to get an argument. Beyond that, installing Linux to ps3 does not seem to me a common project but what easily-available intel for that would be @ google. Different distros have different luck with different hardware. Mandriva has a good hardware-detection reputation. |

CS_BuddyBlack MagePremium join:2002-01-03 Canada | reply to Anonymous_ I forgot.. I had this problem as well. HERE is the solution:
quote: You will probably get an error when it tries to install the Kernel package 'linux-cell'. Just continue and select [Install the base system]
When it asks about an unclean target, just select because it will write over the files anyway. I know it's a waste of time, but it's the only way I found to get to the right kernel installation.
When asked which Kernel to install, you'll probably need to select linux-image-2.6.22-14-cell.
The next thing you may have trouble with depending on your TV is the display settings. You'll probably get a smaller display than you want, so you'll need to go into a command line and adjust it using the "ps3videomode" command. HERE are the setting values:
YUV 60Hz 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p full screen mode: + 128
So for 1080p fullscreen I ran
ps3videomode -v 133
Once you find the proper size, you can make it permanent in kboot.conf:
quote: Edit kboot.conf to set the correct video mode in there: sudo nano /etc/kboot.conf
video=ps3fb:mode: Drawing resolution can be set explicitly, if needed. If there is no video syntax, auto mode is used. 0: auto mode , default value YUV 60Hz 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p YUV 50Hz 6:576i 7:576p 8:720p 9:1080i 10:1080p RGB 60Hz 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p RGB 50Hz 38:576i 39:576p 40:720p 41:1080i 42:1080p VESA 11:WXGA 12:SXGA 13:WUXGA
full screen mode: + 128 dither ON mode : + 2048
We want 1080p with full screen mode this means 5+128=133. Our paramater will be video=ps3fb:mode:133 The linux line should look like this: linux='/boot/vmlinux initrd=/boot/initrd.img root=/dev/sda1 video=ps3fb:mode:133'

| reply to Anonymous_ I just finished installing OpenSuSE 11.0 on my PS3 (using all defaults) and found that the installer had left the wired ethernet interface unconfigured and had setup the wireless network interface for autoconfiguration with DHCP.
Whether or not the wireless interface would have worked I don't know, since I don't use wireless networking at home.
After changing the settings in YaST2->Network Device (deleting the wireless interface and setting the wired ethernet interface to DHCP) the network worked just fine (the PS3 is connected to a DSL router that acts as DHCP server). -- Got some spare cpu cycles ? Join Team Helix or Team Starfire! |
