| Vonage setup question
I have a friend in North Carolina who has Vonage. His configuration is setup and working but he's having problems with various internet port issues. Looking at his setup:
DSL->Speedstream4200->WAN Port of Linksys WRT54G. Vonage Motorola equipment is connected to one of the router LAN ports and his computer connected to the other.
His MODEM is set for PPPOE but his ROUTER is also set as a gateway which gives him a router behind router connection which is causing problems with his internet access. Setting the router to *router* mode disconnects Vonage because the modem is plugged into the WAN port.
If I plug the modem line into one of the LAN ports - what will happen to the Vonage settings? How do I access (remotely as I'm in California) the Vonage settings?
Lastly, is there a site where I can view a manual etc?

| Have him put the modem on bridge mode and the router on router mode.
To access it remotely your best bet is to install something like Remote Admin or LogMeIn on his computer and then access the router from his computer locally.
He may have to call his ISP to get the modem into bridge mode (I had too with a Verizon DSL modem a long, long time ago).

| Thanx by I guess I didn't explain it correctly. I'm concerned what will happen to the Vonage install when I reconfigure the modem - router settings. As it is now, the modem is in bridge mode BUT the router is in Gateway mode and when I try to change it, Vonage goes dead because the modem is plugged into the WAN port. When I plug the modem into the router LAN port - what happens to the Vonage settings, DHCP, DNS, IP. etc?

Bridge is correct on the modem. The Linksys should be set to Gateway. The TA should essentially be plug and play behind the Linksys unless it's settings have been altered.
I don't understand why you're trying to do this from CA, rather than your friend calling Vonage, and let them walk him through it, and make sure his account is properly set up on their system. |

| Vonage set it up initially. he's involved in some multilplayer online activity that is failing the port scans. Looking at his setup - the modem established and logs on (PPPoe) and is connected to the WAN port on the router which is set as a Gateway. If the modem is set for PPPOE AND the router is set to gateway - we have a conflict. So as I understand it the modem should be set to bridge and the router set to gateway and PPPOE should be done in the router.
Have I missed something? |

Sounds correct. If he's a gamer, I'd be concerned with what he did with ports and UPNP to support the gaming. Find out what it was he changed that knocked the TA off line. |

| Well, considering that the router was in gateway mode and the modem was doing the PPPOE and was connected to the WAN port of the router - he switched the router to router mode and the phones disconnected.My question still is this -
if I set the modem to bridge mode and disable PPPOE in the MODEM and plug the modem into the router LAN port rather than the WAN port and configure the router as gateway with PPPOE - do I have to reconfigure the Vonage equipment and if so how?

If all he did was switch Gateway mode to router mode, all he would have had to do was switch it back to gateway mode and power cycle the Linksys, then the TA, and the phones should have come back.
If you bridge the modem, you use the WAN port of the router, so it can do the PPPOE log in, and it's DHCP server will give out IPs through the LAN ports. You can do a hard reset on the Linksys if you want or just set it back to Gateway. If the interface of the modem is on 192.168.1.1, then change the IP of the Linksys to 192.168.1.2. Plug the TA into one of the LAN ports, and it should work if the settings in it weren't changed.
Connecting to a LAN port is only done if you want to use the router as a switch only. The LAN ports are the outbound ports of an integrated switch. The inbound is built into the internal wiring of the router, behind the DHCP server, behind the PPPoE shim, behind the WAN port. |

| I follow what you are saying but I guess I'm still not explaining my question clearly.
Current setup - phones work fine - is:
Modem - handling PPPOE connected to
WAN port of Linksys which is in GATEWAY mode with TA and computer connected to LAN ports.
1) Isn't this redundant? Modem handling PPPOE *AND* router in gateway mode?
2) If I do nothing other than plug the MODEM in to the LAN port rather than the WAN port, will it work or do I have to do something else to the TA?

It is redundant/ double natting the connection.
Normally with a router behind the modem/router you would put the modem in bridge mode and let the router do the PPPoE login, and dish out IPs to connected equipment. The way it is will be fine, connected to a LAN port if you disable the DHCP server in the router, then you will be using the router as just a switch. Nothing should need changed in the TA.
The main difference with which piece does the PPPoE login is which one holds the Public IP. There's also a possibility both the modem and Linksys could be using 192.168.1.1 as their IP. That doesn't matter if you go to the LAN port. You would just have to connect directly to the modem to get into it's interface, to check stats or change settings. |

| it takes me a while but I think I got it now!
The double natting was/is my issue. There are multiplayer online games that he has trouble with and I'm trying to get down to the simplest config. Letting the modem do the work and having the Linksys as a switch is what I was considering and seeing that it won't trash the TA settings I'll give it a go and see if it helps.

The best way to do this...
Modem > Vonage > Router > PCs
Modem in Bridge mode (call ISP)
Vonage device does PPPoE and set DMZ host to the Router's IP address. DHCP disabled
Router has a static IP address that is set as the DMZ in the vonage device.
This way will ensure you keep your QoS for vonage and that you only have 1 router blocking ports to protect your computers. On the router you can open port 3389 to a PC that has remote access enabled. You can RDP to that computer to manage the router and vonage device. |
