Moving to Southern California in August

Hey all, I'm going to be stationed at Vandenberg AFB soon and as a result I'll be moving to CA (as I think commuting from Vandenberg to Cleveland would be a bit much).

I'm not to familiar with this region, the last time I was in CA was when I was 3 (1988). I know I'm going to have to get used to not having insane blizzards in the winter, but is there anything else of note?

I'm 99% sure I'll be living in Santa Maria, I've heard pretty good things about the city, but still overall in the dark.

What cable company and phone company services Santa Maria? What would the average price of utilities be? I know electricity is more expensive out there, as is water. A rough estimate perhaps?

How is the 101 traffic-wise north of LA? Manageable or bumper to bumper?

Any other use tidbits of information would be useful! Thanks in advance

Everyone is familiar with LA traffic and 101 is totally off the hook. Expect bumper to bumper traffic as that is one of the main arteries to get to Los Angeles.

Prepare yourself for good Mexican food.

Some knowledge of Spanish helps.

Santa Maria is the home of excellent tri-tip bbq.

Don't call California Cali.

Comcast is your cable company.

You'll like the weather.

101 through Santa Maria isn't bad but it can be frustrating through parts of Santa Barbara and Ventura.

Santa Maria is a nice place to live, easy access to the coast and several beautiful places to spend time.

And remember it's cool to call San Bernadino San Berdoo and San Francisco, Frisco. Peoeple in those cities love the easy familiarity of those names.

Above all, never, never, never, believe anything MotherNature says - aka - RFC.

Hey there! I know Lakewood! (East Sider here from Chesterland).

Weather here is wonderful, you will not just love it, you will freaking ADORE it.

There is no football (sucks) but there is a large Southern CA Browns Backers Club. The Tribe comes to town once a year to play the Angels of Wherever They Are.

Utilities are so much less than what you are used to--my gas bill is like $35 a month, maybe $50 in "winter". Food is a little less. Gasoline is more and rent is waaaaaayyyy more. So is traffic--we have more traffic than you can even imagine.

Food is wonderful--real chinese and mexican, not the Chi Chi's kind of crap. But the Italian, not so much (no Little Italy here!)

I pretty much miss the Browns and uh... um... the music fans are better in Cleveland. We still rock out better than people here. But that is about it.

Want to trade utility bills? My gas bill is 8-10X that and electricity is even more.

No thanks!

I live near the coast, so no AC most of the time

Awesome sounds fun. As far as utilities go - I've just heard that electricity is expensive out there, that's my main concern as I will be running several computers. I'm not too concerned about air conditioning since its a very mild climate.

I know the cost of living is higher, which is going to take some getting used to, but I can deal with it.

Thanks all, and any more tips is appreciated.

I second that. Nothing gives you away faster that you are not from California if you say 'Cali'.

Go Angels.

ahem. instead of crappy thuggish and boring NFL games, we have some of the best college games available, and there's at least one home game almost every week during the season.

any why anyone would want to be called a brown backer is beyond me.

vandenberg is nice. i'd almost want to spend most of my time on the base.
