I moved two weeks ago and will give you a few pointers that I've learned the hard way.
1) Hire labor or you'll be too exhausted for the trip itself.
2) Check out storage units before heading down just incase. You do not want to have to pay the movers to store your things!!!
3) Pack a couple of easily identifiable boxes/suitcases like you're going on a two week camping trip. Shampoo, tooth brush and paste, razor, lotion, canned food, small packs of laundry needs, anything you may need in a two week period. Trust me on this, it's no fun to be madly digging through boxes for something you know is 'somewhere'. The trips to Walmart get old fast.
Do you know where you'll be ending up? i.e. do you have an apartment waiting? Have you checked into weekly/monthly rentals at hotels? When I moved to Missouri from Boston a decade ago, I spent two weeks in a hotel crammed with boxes and my cat before I found a place.
