Thanks for the replies. The LLC seems to be the easiest to acquire and administer for a sole proprietor.
That's a good point about doing it yourself.I will check the PA site first. I guess I've been trained to assume government=complicated 
That's interesting about the F500 companies. I don't expect I'll be dealing with any of them. The nice part about being retired and consulting is you can say no to perspective clients. 
EDIT: Found the PA info website
The PA application is fairly simple and $125 but....
There is another section where there is an annual fee of $420  for an LLC providing "professional services" while not specifically stating what that is. However, in the form for paying the $420 it says "was licensed to practice that service" Since, I'm only licensed to drive a car I don't think the $420 applies to me.
