Thanks for the replies. The LLC seems to be the easiest to acquire and administer for a sole proprietor.
That's a good point about doing it yourself.I will check the PA site first. I guess I've been trained to assume government=complicated 
That's interesting about the F500 companies. I don't expect I'll be dealing with any of them. The nice part about being retired and consulting is you can say no to perspective clients.

The PA application is fairly simple and $125 but....
There is another section where there is an annual fee of $420 for an LLC providing "professional services" while not specifically stating what that is. However, in the form for paying the $420 it says "was licensed to practice that service" Since, I'm only licensed to drive a car I don't think the $420 applies to me. Maybe
