| Bad card or bum camera?
 PENTAX K20D 180mm 1/13th +1.7ev F5.6 ISO800

I just got my new K20D and I'm seeing some weird stuff in a bunch of my shots... I'm using the same card as I used in my old camera (reformatted in the camera) so I'm thinking its the camera, but I don't have another card at the moment (should be here in a few days) - any thoughts?? -- "We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us.... | Do you have another cam you can put the card in?
Really could be both, wihout testing the card, or having a second alt card to use in the 20D. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

| Yes if a tethered RA live capture shot to PC looked OK most (but not absolutely) likely the card.(could still be the card/cam interface) -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

The amount of DOA K20Ds has been relatively low but, these things do happen. My money is on the card. |

| reply to ccallana My 2cents is on the camera. Either the image processor or possibly the CCD being screwed. It does resemble a broken LCD monitor. Don't know if that would look like a broken CCD as well, I've not had the guts to break one and find out |

| reply to ccallana The image looks perfectly normal to me. But, I have dropped a lot of acid in the past.
Well, you'll know after you get the new card. I assume you've formatted the old card recently? [EDIT: Doh, you posted that it was formatted in the camera.] Obviously, you could try reformatting in the camera a couple more times.

| reply to ccallana Does it do this to jpgs? Try shooting RAW+jpg to make sure... or extract the embedded jpg from a damaged PEF/DNG.
If the jpgs look fine but the RAWs don't, it points to the card as the problem.
If the jpgs show the same exact same weird effects as your processed raws, I'd blame the camera in a heartbeat. A write error to the card could not affect the jpg the same way as the RAW. -- My Site |

| reply to ccallana Got my new cards today - so far so good... ~50 shots, nothing bad yet.... maybe my other card just went bad... will need to shoot a bit more before I feel totally comfortable...
Thanks for the insight and suggestions... -- "We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us.... We are far too easily pleased." C.S. Lewis |

Better a blown card than camera. |

| reply to ccallana Something you might try with the "old" card contacts.
A little trick I have used with a pencil erasure is to lightly rub the contacts on the card. This will polish any tarnishing, or light corrosion that might be present, making better connection within the camera, and reader. Doesn't take much to interfere with the connection, and possibly cause too much resistance.
