Wanted: owners for 1,500 stolen Toronto bicycles

Toronto police are looking for the owners of some 1,500 bicycles they have recovered after raids on a shop, home and storage garages across Canada's biggest city.

Police put more than 200 of the bicycles on display, giving the owners a chance to claim their stolen property.

"More than 50 bicycles have so far been identified and returned to their rightful owners, including one bicycle that was stolen eight years ago," a police statement said.

The shop owner, arrested during a police sting operation last week, faces charges of theft, attempted theft, possession of stolen property and possession of tools for use in burglary.

Toronto cyclists often describe their city as one of the bike theft capitals of North America, if not the world.

But figures from lockmaker Kryptonite, cited by the Toronto Sun newspaper last week, says Toronto, unlike Philadelphia, Chicago and New York, is not even in North America's Top 10.

there was a local place that sold higher end bikes here many years ago, and i suspected they were involved in some theft ring too.

i bought a higher end BMX Shogun bike (about $400) and it was stolen about a couple months after i bought it...shortly after, i replaced it with another higher end Norco (this time a mountain bike) and it was stolen at school.

i couldn't afford to buy these bikes any more so i purchased some Canadian Tire bike and had it for many years with no problems...i just found it odd that both bikes i purchased from the same store were stolen shortly after i bought them...i was only about 14 and both bikes were paid for out of my own pocket (it took me forever to save that kind of money) and we didn't have any insurance or anything so i was SOL when they were taken.

I posted a long time back about dealing with a theif electrically and could not believe the sympathy for the crook. »Bicycle part theft:

@look.ca

I think they were more concerned with a potential murder charge than sympathy for a crappy bicycle theft in that post. Anyway, please don't get this thread locked like that one. This thread actually has some potential informational value to people in the GTA who may have had a bike stolen in the last few years...

just because the owner was less than 100% vigilant doesn't make it ok for someone to to steal their bike

Why do people always feel the need to put words in other peoples mouths?

DID I SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT BEING OK?

The point I was making was that IF the owner at least attempted to be as "vigilant" as possible, they'd most likely not have their bike stolen and they wouldn't be bitching about it like there aren't more important matters in life.

Only way for a bike owner to be "completely vigilant" would be to wheel it with them wherever they went.

In university, I kept my bike in my dorm. Clearly this is not always possible.

Regardless, the shady bike store owner (well-known to Liberty Village residents for years for sometimes having "hot" merchandise) was witnessed directing two guys to steal bikes with a pair of 5ft. bolt cutters. Not much you can do with that.

P.S. Bike owners tend to be emotional when it comes to theft.

Quanta... car owners also get emotional when it comes to theft, house owners also get emotional when it comes to theft... what's your point?

The problem was you started out using 'lol' followed by implying that the victim of the crime was more responsible then the criminal by possibly leaving their bike in a place where it could have been stolen, or without a lock.

The thing about your post is, you didn't say it was ok; you condemned the victims of a crime rather then the criminals. Maybe I'm from a different part of Ontario, or I'm getting older and such but I remember when I actually could leave a bike with no lock, in a park, for two days and it would still be there when I got back. Sadly, even here those days are gone.

Rather it makes me more sad for the state of society and all the piss ass little criminals running around.

Um no, I'm sorry but sometimes, if the owner is too stupid and careless about their property, I won't feel as bad for them as if they at least put some effort into protecting it using some brains.

The real "sadness" of society is people are becoming stupid, too stupid that criminals are left with no other option but to take advantage of easy situations for themselves, whether it be right or wrong actions.

Don't get me wrong, I am strongly against theft like this, but if I take my bike, and leave it in the middle of the street in a really busy city with 4+ million people, leave it in a location where MANY people pass by each day, and not even locked, then all I'm saying is, it's the person's own ignorance for the loss of their property.

That's the thing it's their property. Lock the doors, bar the windows, security systems on everything, toss the flamethrowers on the cars too? As a deterrent. No, the sadness is people feel that they can take whatever they want if it's laying around. It's simply become more prevalent in the 'me' generation.

I suppose personal morality and such is a thin and frivolous thing these days.

I agree with you Mashiki. I remember a time when you didn't even take the keys out the car when you parked. Sure it was Pembroke, but still.
