[Misc] Which kind of card to get?

My new camera takes SD, SDHC, MultiMediaCards, MMCPlus and HC MMCplus.

My computer takes SD/MMC, MS/Pro (from text on card reader slot). UPDATE: Memory Stick, SD, SDIO, SDHC, SDHD, MS, MS Pro, MMC and Xd formats.

I've never had anything but SD or old CF.

• Which options will work in both the camera and computer?
• What are the pros and cons of the options that will work in both?

Thanks

The biggest card that will work in both your camera and your PC is a 2GB SD (not SDHC).
-Devices that can read SDHC can also read SD.
-The SD spec only goes up to 2GB.
-You can find larger SD cards but by definition are nonstandard and may be unreadable by your equipment.
-SDHC cards might not be readable by SD-only equipment.
-MMC and SD are kissing cousins. SD is the "secure" (supports DRM) version of the open-source MMC spec.

Wikipedia can shed more light on MMC, SD and SDHC.

Cool thanks. The computer is new. Vostro 1700 has this Media Card Slot:
8-in-1 media memory card reader supporting Memory Stick, SD, SDIO, SDHC, SDHD, MS, MS Pro, MMC and Xd formats.

So they both handle SD & SDHC & MMC.

Looking at Wikipedia for SD, it says that HD goes up to 4 GB and that SDHC is up to 32 GB.

The camera, Canon PowerShot G9, came with an MMC Plus - 32 MH, while smaller Canon PowerShots that I have all come with SD - 16 MB.

Does the higher-end camera coming with MMC Plus say something about MMC Plus vs. SD? (Things I've read say that, on the contrary, SD is more advanced (should I care?) than MMC (but not necessarily MMC Plus)).
So what format & size would be best?

The fact that Canon "throws in" a MMC card with the camera really means little. It's just so that you can start taking pics immediately. 32 MB is teeny.

Since both your camera and your PC can handle SDHC, that's what I would buy. Just my 0.02 USD.

Thanks.

Some products are called Turbo SDHC.

Is there some kind of standard for Turbo and, if so, what does it offer?

No, that is not one of the standards. SDHC are cards that are 4gb or larger, and have Class Ratings of 2, 4, or 6. The class is determined by the minimum sustained write speed, ie 2mb/s, 4mb/s, or 6mb/s. The Sandisk Extreme III's for example are Class 6, but actually have a sustained write speed of 20mb/s.

Ah thanks. So should I pay no attention to the word Turbo in the name of SD cards?

Do you agree that the SD are faster than MMC?

Also, when you search at PriceWatch, it seems that Class is not a searchable category, right?
