Metro E

Is anyone here terminating Metro E connections for end users? I've been asked to look into the technical side of offering Metro E service in a LATA AT&T Southeast (former BellSouth).

The only info I have so far is that AT&T will hand me 100Mb Ethernet at our Data Center and then hand 10 or 100Mb Ethernet at the customer side. My guess is the customer side is like any other Ethernet hand off. Is it as simple as creating vLans in a 7206vxr?

From configuration perspective, pretty much yes

Thanks, I've got a 7206 that I hoped could be used for this.

We have this at a customer running from his DC in Newnan to a site in Roswell. We have a 7206 on each end and it works like a charm.

We terminate on 7600 series, but we're not using another provider for the last mile, we own all the fibre end to end. Whatever routing equipment you have make sure you plan for the future (mpls services, managed services, etc). From that point on you're just creating SVI's or subif's.

It depends how they deliver it to you. Running your own VLANs over it may or may not be possible.

If you want to be sure, ask whether Q-in-Q is supported, and if not, can it be enabled. Otherwise you will find it simply wont work.

Many providers will deliver these services in a VLAN of their own, but they have to be specifically configured to allow VLAN trunking through them, i.e. with Q-in-Q (assuming that dot1q is used as the VLAN trunking method in their network, which we sincerely hope it is).

I've told sales we can probably offer this with minimal outlay of cash. I've already got a 7206vxr here that's doing nothing but twiddling it's thumbs.
