| WOW....
my wow service is getting worse and worse every day.
i had my modem a few splitters off the main wire, and my internet was constantly cutting out, literally every hour or so, for a good 10 minutes each time.
finally i had enough and moved the modem to the very first splitter, and the internet hasn't gone out (that ive seen) but now my speed and latency are very erratic.
i can't play any online game because my ping jumps from 60 to 400 to 2000... web pages take forever to load, and the service is just overall crappy, and very frustrating.
we've had problems in the past, and a tech came out to the house... well, to the pole behind my house and fiddled around for a little bit, but that didn't fix anything.
im in mount greenwood (60655), anyone around this area having similar problems... or does wow just hate me?
what can i do to solve this problem, without canceling, because that is not an option, and calling them to complain is useless. |

| I have had zero problems with wow for years now, until around the 4th July holiday. and then on and off now since. I don't know what is going on, and only thought it was a local thing. Tonight I can't get to my e-mail and the web-site wowway.com and wideopenwest.com are both down. This is starting to look like a wider problem than just here. Anyways getting the same problems, everything just drops for a while and then picks back up. I also called and was told by the tech that he was getting other calls about this. I hope it get worked out as I have my phone, cable and internet tied to WOW. And never a problem until lately. |

| reply to baturkin I've been with WOW now for 3 years now and I've had very few problems. The problems have been few and far between for me and not lasting very long at all.
All you can do is call and demand service. I've found that WOW customer service is far better than Comcast...so hopefully they get this fixed for you. |

| reply to baturkin What are the readings from your cable modem?
I had similar problems. After a series of calls to tech support, an in home "tech" who just ran a speed test and said it was fine, and finally a great line tech who was also a gamer and knew exactly where to look for the problem; the problem was finally fixed.
The last guy logged into my modem and checked the numbers there and said my line noise was too high and my upstream was too weak. The initial installer put some sort of gadget that comes into my box on the side of my house that was meant for basic cable subscribers only. He put the right size on and everything has been pretty good since.
I'm not an expert by any means, however what you have sounds very close to what I had. You may want to check the modem signals. |

@wideopenwest.com | Clocker, your upstream is barely within the allowed limit. It should ideally be under 52, and 55 is the limit. You might want to check that out. |

Don't seem to have any performance problems but I do have an amp near by where the modem split is so maybe I try connecting the branch that goes to the cable modem to the amp just to see what happens... Or... would that only make the "problem" worse???

| I guess it made it worse? Maybe I need to ADD a splitter?
Here are my signals with the modem connected to the 1x4 splitter/amp (made by Scientific Atlanta).

Maybe imrf or one of the other guys who knows more about this can answer, but I believe the downstream (receive) is supposed to be as close to 0 as possible. Mine is -1dBmV. Evidently, your modem doesn't give you a "Signal to Noise Ratio"? |

I think that may be a target level they shoot for, but DOCSIS spec is different.
From the CableLabs Downstream RF Interface Specification:
5.3 Downstream Plant Assumptions The DRFI specifications have been developed with the downstream plant assumptions of this section. 5.3.1 Transmission Levels The nominal power level of the downstream RF signal(s) within a six-MHz channel (average power) is targeted to be in the range: -10 dBc to -6 dBc, relative to analog video carrier level (peak power) and will normally not exceed analog video carrier level.
Notice they use the term Assumptions.
