 Worth buying AMD stock?

I was looking at AMD's chart and noticed their stock is lower than they opened. Is now a good time to buy? Just wondering because a company might offer to purchase them.

You will now get 3 answers. Yes, No, or Something Else.

I have no idea if it's worth buying now (so I'm a something else). But my advice is for you to carefully study some reputable funds and invest in one of those for long term. You're still young so you have many years to ride the wave. And who knows, when you are old, you might actually have accumulated a decent return on it.

I am hoping someone buys them out and they shoot up to $40 a share or more.

Then don't buy them unless you KNOW someone is going to. Hoping they get bought is a surefire way to lose your money.

Even if they get bought, they are at $5 share now. They won't go above $40, or get anywhere near that. I'd say if they get bought, you'll see a 10% premium. So you'll see $5.50 a share. When a company is bought, your number of shares aren't exchanged equally for shares of the new company. You get fractional shares of the new company. So, assume your AMD share is worth $5 and they get bought by someone who is worth $40/share, you'd get 12.5% of a whole share of the new company for every share of AMD you own.

In other words, you'd make $.50 a share, maybe. Not $35/share like you're hoping.

I think AMD would be a hard sell when you know you have to go head-on with INTEL!!!

Look closely there are hundreds of good companies whos share prices have dropped and most likely will drop even more!!!

Only if there is reason to buy them out and then they need to find someone who will buy them out. Only way they are going to get bought out for $40/share is if they are already close to that price. They have a lot of debt a new company would have to deal with and that will force the price lower.

Rule #2 for stock buyers - don't by on "I hope" and nothing more.

If he knows someone's going to buy them out, then either it's illegal insider trading or the news is already out, in which case it's too late to buy.

I think there was an article here on BBR that had AMD as one of the companies that will be out of business soon. I wouldn't buy any stock from them as there is a good chance my money would disappear.

Intel can't really afford that - I think they will either be bought or do a partnership with another large company but Intel has a lot of money tied up in AMD.

They won't be bought in the level that the OP wants.

I wouldn't ask for stock advice on ANY internet forum.

I think it would be a good idea to forget individual securities and put your money into a no load, low-cost index fund. Especially with the dow below 11,000.

My 2 pennies.

Maybe the government will bail them out. They seem to be doing alot of that lately anyway.

Securities are fine just as long as the horizon for investing is many years down the road.

With a up and down market like the last 5 years or so - well managed funds are generally better and can return a good bit more than an index fund that goes up and down with the market.

It's a risky move.

AMD has some major financial problems. Even if they are bought out, I can't see it being at a really high price. I'd say no....

Holy sh*t ! You're right ! I'd invest every penny I had in them... Their share price is really low. I wonder why though ? I wonder if the "why" is reason enough for them *not* to be bought ?

Well considering the OP has broken some of the rules of trade I'll throw in what I think.... I would have to agree with that. For some reason something tells me this is just a repeat of history for AMD. Remember when all these rumors flew around about AMD going under before they released the first Athlon processor?

Jim Cramer from CNBC's Mad Money said the other night to stay away from technology stocks right now because of booyah this and booyah that.

So I am not sure but I believe Cramer telling people to stay away is code for telling them to BUY BUY BUY!

I really wouldn't dump my money into a stock to speculate whether it may or may not get bought out. AMD is in tough shape. That's why the price is so cheap. They can't keep up with Intel's chips. Ever since the Core2Duo came out, it was like a death blow to AMD.
