| Service Electric Cable Modem Question
I have a question perhaps some of the guru's can help with. I currently have DSL Verizon which has the Modem/Router all in one., and have just signed up with Service Electric (sunbury) triple play pack. I did not want to rent or purchace a modem from them. but I am looking for a good Modem/Wireless router all in one so I dont have to run two separate units. Any suggestions appreciated.  |

Anyway, i'm not sure of a combo cable modem / wireless router out there other than the Motorola 901 (I think that's what it's called).
The only things:
1) Not sure if SECV would support it
2) I always read bad reviews about it's performance
My mom and brother both have cable modem service with SECV and use an SB 5100 modem, along with a DLink router.

Just to confirm for JeepMatt  , SECV does support the Moto SBG900. (I think that is what he was referring to, although it is really just an access point and not a router capable of supporting multiple computers at once.)
I personally like Linksys or Netgear gateways if I would go that route. However, I must say that I am a big fan of running two separate units as opposed to using gateway combos. It is just easier to troubleshoot and if one side goes out, you are not out both a cable modem and a router. |

thanks Madman and Jeepmatt for your input, i also seen the Moto SBG900 and read mixed reviews and didnt realize it was just a access point so a big thanks since i do need to support multiple computers at once. also btw, with the phone with triple play if anyone knows it there a separate box for the phone (like vonage) or is it going thru via the receiver? |

My mom has the Triple Play. She owned her Motorola cable modem.
When they added the phone to her account, they installed a 2nd cable modem in the basement. I think it was the Arris MTA, but not 100% certain.
Not sure if they do it this way for everyone, but that's how she's set up. Granted, it's a completely redone 2 story farmhouse. The internet modem was on the 2nd floor, so I think it was simply easier to install the phone modem in the basement in order to hook it into the house phone line.

thanks again for the help. Im a female although fairly tech savvy, i am not very familiar with cable, i am so hoping i am not disappointed. Does anyone supporting more than one phone line with their cable? I currently have two lines, i only ported the one, they wont be out to do the installation until 07/30. |

| Can't help you with the multiple line question..sorry.
You shouldn't be disappointed. PTD (the ISP) has really built a damn nice network in that area. And if you get the Triple Play, you're on the 10/1 speed tier. My mom was getting around 10000/951, and that was on wireless.
SECV's HD lineup is even ahead of Comcast in this area (that is if you have an HDTV). And with the On Demand they just added, they're pretty kick-ass for a smaller-town company.

Yes, the Arris eMTA that they will install for your phone service supports up to 2 phone lines. It will basically take the place of your phone NID, which is where your dial tone generates from now. They will connect the eMTA up to your existing telephone wires inside your home and you will pretty much notice nothing new as far as the way you use your service.
I am a big fan of SECV in your area. I think they have to be the best mom & pop cable company in existence in terms of services offered, reliability, customer service, and channel choices. Not to mention value vs. price. I am sure you will not be disappointed. |
