[ps3] Western Digital Velociraptor In PS3?

Had a crazy idea last night, I'm basically going to purchase a PS3 in the next few weeks. Brother has a Wii and I already have an Xbox 360.

Seeing as the new Western Digital Raptor drive is is 2.5inch form factor...does anybody know if this badboy will work in a PS3?

I would love to have 300gb hard drive that spins at 10K RPMs in my PS3.

I don't believe the new drives use a standard laptop configuration for their ports.

I don't think you would. It would be needlessly loud and hot, and you wouldn't see a big improvement while gaming. I never notice my 5400 RPM drive in my PS3 being accessed now.

I know it would fit, the drive uses the standard sata 3.0 port, but the thing is would it work? and raptor drives aren't that loud.

I was hoping somebody here had already tried it.

I mistakenly went with a 7200RPM 200GB drive, thinking it may have some effect on performance. It does not. A 10,000 RPM drive would add heat, make the fan louder and games less enjoyable, but wouldn't add to game performance in my experience.

The only thing a faster drive seems to do is slightly increase installation times. This is a very very small percentage of use. I'd suggest getting a low power 250 GB drive if you can, they run about $100 and are what I'll install on my 2nd PS3 whenever I'm motivated to do it. Installation of a laptop SATA drive on a PS3 is trivial. However, I suggest watching a video or two on youtube just to make certain there is nothing not completely understood. Some real time installations seem to take only a couple of minutes.

I wonder if anyone has tried a solid state drive. That would be insanely expensive but also very quiet and cold and fast too.

um, fyi, there's a good reason that the harddrive has a big ass heatsink.

Western Digital already commented that the heatsink is more cosmetic then functional.

how much airflow do you think is going over the harddrive that costs around $300 inside that ps3 ?

i got a raptor 150(bigger and more surface area) that has a fan dedicated to airflow over that and the thing is still hot.

The Velicoraptor doesn't use the standard SATA connectors on the back according to every article I've read. The big ass (cosmetic) heatsink is really just a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter and has some weird adapter built in so it works with standard SATA.

If you can plug a SATA cable in, there's no reason it wouldn't work though. SATA is SATA is SATA. The Raptor just spins the platter faster.

it uses the standard adapter as far as the tech sheet says.

I was mistaken. It's the 3.5" chassis that doesn't position the SATA connectors in the proper location. The actual 2.5" drive has them in the correct location.

That drive will not fit into the PS3, the drive is 15mm high (9.5mm is the limit).
