Bandwidth Usage??

Heya,

Just a quick question. When I check my bandwidth usage, TekSavvy's website shows is at something like 54GB for this month so far. But, I have a bandwidth monitor, and it reports 41GB this month so far. That's a difference of 13GB! Every month the usages are at a max of ~5GB different (from TekSavvy and my BW monitor), and that's at the END of the month. This month its 13GB already and we're not even half way through?

Any idea whats the problem? I know there's overhead and stuff... but there's no way it can account for 13GB, especially since the computer isn't on 24/7 and we are not even half way through July. Anything I can do about this? I don't wanna go over the 200GB cap and get charged...

thx!

what was your past bandwidth habbits like?

perhaps you may want to consider unlimited if your worried about going over for 40/mo

also over usage is

Additional Bandwidth - $0.25/GB/mo.
Pre-Purchased Blocks - $10/100GB/mo. (paid a month in advance)

TekSavvy measures bandwidth with 1000-base (typically used in networking), while your bandwidth monitor probably measures bandwidth with 1024-base.

Right off the bat, that accounts for something like 7.4%. Also consider that a certain amount of overhead is likely included in the calculations. The ATM overhead probably isn't, but TCP overhead would be counted, and PPPoE overhead might be too.

TCP, IP, and PPPoE overhead are PPPoE overhead are 1.65%, 1.3%, and 0.53% respectively. If I'm adding that up correctly, that would be roughly 11% difference between what TekSavvy reports and what you see.

If ATM overhead were to be included, that would probably roughly double that 11%. ATM itself has a huge amount of overhead, nearly 10%.

Yeah, I know its for both UP and DOWN.

Also, is it really likely that ive used 13GB in overhead? The computer doesnt download/upload overnight, so whatever is done is only during daytime...

do you have a wireless router? do you have other computers on the network?

We have a 2Wire modem, and the wireless is DISABLED.

I had a similar experience this month. The tracker showed usage 12GB over what was on my router on July 1st. I took up the issue with support and eventually received this answer.

said by "TS Support" :
As for the bandwidth tracker we've known about a couple issues for the past
few months, and as the actual tracker does not always reflect what we have in
our records on the backend(which is how it was explained to me) sometimes
there are discrepancies. What happens is that the server which records the
bandwidth has occasional hiccups and when that happens entire timeframes are
recorded at the same time instead of when they're actually downloaded. This
doesn't always happens and its not with every user so tracking every user down
and fixing each one isn't completed at this point.

Hope this helps.

I'm glad they're aware of the issue and have different records than what is shown on the tracker. I'm sure TS will be able to resolve any situation involving additional bandwidth charges in a fair manner.

The usage currently being displayed on our website is up to date and accurate. The issues were largely resolved a couple weeks ago.

Maybe so, but there are still a few stragglers like the OP and myself that have yet to see these fixes.

I still don't see why there would be a problem. Can you PM your info so I can have a look at your logs. Is it possible there are more then one login?

Just looking at your logs, there is only one login.

I'll do the calculation by hand see what it works out to.

Hope you're not spending too much time on this. I sent you an image of my router logs for reference.

I just confirmed with darcmage, the checker is infact wrong.

The data stored is correct but the equation used to do the calculation is not.

Has it been fixed? If it's not calculating the daily totals properly then some people might be incorrectly charged overage fees.
