| Hey guys - another bell to savvy
Mind if I ask a few questions about Teksavvy Residential DSL.
(i won't waste time talking about how bell screwed me, i promise)
1) I have a SPARE bell modem (speedsteram 5200). Can I use
it instead of spending money on a new one from Teksavvy?
2) I hear great reviews. But I got to try it out to find it
out myself. So is it as simple as "pay 2/3 months charge
try it out for 2/3 months and disconnect if it doesn't
work for me?" No hassles?
3) Finally........p2p/torrent throttling. What is teksavvy's
stand on this? I get 300 KB/s normal download speed and
about 50 KB/s torrent speed with bell.

Assuming Bell canada lets you keep the modem (Sympatico modems are rented and need to be sent back to Bell when you end your service with them), yes, it will work. On the modem side, no changes are needed. (same VPI/VCI setting).
You can begin with a login-only account. Costs you $10 (you continue your Sympatico subscription, they end up paying for your ADSL service). You can switch back and forth between your sympatico and teksavvy services by changing the login information. If you don't like it, you can cancel the $10 and remain with Sympatico. Least amount of troiuble to test the water with your toes.
Once you are happy with Teksavvy, you can call to cancel Sympatico, and call Teksavvy to take over your DSL on the sympatico date of cancellation, at which point they convert you $10/month login-only to a full service.
Teksavvy doesn't have contracts. So you could switch to them cold turkey and then if not happy cancel them and switch to another ISP.
Teksavvy is the most visible ISP fighting throttling. Mr Rocky has been at the forefront of the fight both on the public and backroom planning aspects. And I can state that he has put his money where his mouth is far more than any other ISP out there. He paid for buses to bring people from various cities to a protest in Ottawa.
At this point in time, you will get full speed during the day, under 60KB/s between 16:30 and 18:00 and under 30KB/s after 18:00 until 02:00. Sometimes at 01:00 they raise it back to under 60KB/s. |

Excellent replies. Thanks very much...both of you.
I assume those speeds you mentioned (full speed during daytime) are teksavvy's and NOT just ANY isp's ('coz bell doesn't give me full speed during daytime).
So, if I take the login only account from teksavvy, will I notice this speed increase (for p2p) or do I have to have full service for that?

| daytime speeds are determined by the DSL Profile you are set on by Bell. 300kB/sec tells us you are on a 2.4mbps (or thereabouts) profile.
Depending on your DSL Line stats (line quality, distance, etc.) teksavvy may be able to request a higher profile speed. Until you get a FULL ACCOUNT from teksavvy they won't be able to deal w/ profile issues.
seeing as how you already have symcrapico i don't see any problems just switching over. the line is already installed, they just need to swap some things around. |

I wonder if the same applies for the Speedstream 6520, that it could be updated to a non-Bell firmware. Will have to Google. |

The same does apply for the 6520, I'm running Siemens firmware on ours.
It's a fairly resilient beast with a decent interface once you get the bell garbage out of it. |

In this thread they talk about the firmware, then someone posts a link (search for adamK)
Now also, being that this firmware is from the other side of the planet. It's not configured out of the box to work in canada. So you need to make it work here at home.
Thankfully HiVolt has already covered this in yet another thread so I don't have to type it out:

| I don't get it.
First thing......I don't see any firmware for my modem version (5200) even after googling it.
Second......I don't have any sync problems etc with the connection. What advantage would I have if I upgrad the firmware to siemens? I DO consider being able to see line stats as an advantage, albeit a minor advantage (i cannot see any stats at 192.168.2.1 with bell firmware).
Third.......someone talked about how I could get the modem fried if I don't select the correct firmware (if i get Australian or NewZealand's or something).
Finally.....among the link you provided, "HIVOLT" was talking about:
1. Log in as admin user
2. Click on the Gateway icon on top
3. Click on ISP Connection icon on the left etc
I don't know where to do these steps. I guess if I upgrade the firmware and go to 192.168.2.1 (and enter my bell username and password), I can see this "Gateway icon", "ISP Connection icon" etc ('coz I cannot see them now anywhere on my computer).
